i got a 289 in my 64 too, i'm keeping it for now, only because i'm happy with it, they are powerful engines and with little things here and there to boost hp, u'll be fine, thats how mine's set up. i mean, unless ur gonna drag it or whatever, go for the higher engines, if not, stay wit the 289-and with gas prices increasing like they are, it's slowly killing the classic car industry. i think anyone with a classic doesn't really care, i know i don't, but at the same time, ppl with the bigger engines will have to pay more for gas. it sux. and i'm always optimistic. someday, they'll go back down.

Nice galaxie. Me and my dad have had a 64 Galaxie 500XL 2DR Hardtop in the family for 27 years now, it needs some restoring but when we get to doing that, ill have it on here. As for your engine, i would definetly stay original w/ the 289. Not everone has a 289 and despite its relatively small cubies, the 289 is a powerfull engine in stock form, but with some good mods in the block and heads, they are all out mean. With performance in mind, in my opinion i would still keep the as original as possible. But an option would be to find a 390. Those engines were stock in those cars too. I have one in my Galaxie, and in my mom's 63 T-Bird and it is rated at 300hsp from the factory. That would be a perfect foundation for a real ground pounder. Anyway keep up the good work. If you get time check out my 95 Lincoln Mark 8.
