Today 12/04/2005 I got my TRD quickshift set (its actually for Scion xB, but it seems to fit just fine) and threw that in there.
Although the shifts don't feel much shorter, the feeling is a lot crisper (due to the brass bushings instead of the stock rubber ones) and I also absolutely love the TRD shift knob.
It wasn't terribly difficult to do, anyone with a socket set and screwdriver should be able to tackle it.
Once you get the console off, it'll look like this:
The part that you take out is that whole white box thing. The TRD one replaces the whole thing. Also notice on the boot, the silver clip. That is what holds the boot from falling down.
The TRD shifter assembly has a thicker shaft (for strength?) so you cannot use the stock boot retaining clip. I thought it would suck, but the boot seems to be staying up fairly well by itself. Aswell the TRD shaft is coated with a black plastic so that it doesn't look redicilously out of place if the boot hangs down a centimeter or so.
The TRD knob doesn't have the gear positions labeled on it, so they give you this trick little sticker.
thats where I stuck mine, although I'm sure you know the positions of you gears by now (maybe some of you don't? - please watch the road when you are shifting though, not the centre console)
The TRD one is such a perfect fit...
It even has the holes for you to clip the stock wiring harness back in.
Here it is installed (you can see the old one in the background)
I love the TRD shift knob so much, I tried to snap a picture of it, but it didn't turn out that well. Maybe I'll have a chance to get a better one in the future (picture, not knob)
and here is the finished product installed. You can see how the boot has kind of a loose look to it at the top now.
A small price to pay.
