1989 HONDA CRX SI w/ TURBO D16Z6

Update:6/2006

As of this month I have parted with this CR-X to pursue different avenues and get outta Honda cars for just a LITTLE while. The buyer of this particular one has purposefully blown the D16Z6 by pulling the wastegate vacuum line off and pushed the motor's limits before blowing the motor, at a surprising 22psi, LOL, then has dropped a B16A into it with got a different exhaust manifold for the turbo. Hope he has fun with it! And I hope you enjoy seeing the things I've done to this one to my own taste...

Boostd_Rex's 1989 Honda CRX

Date: 11/2004

My last pride and joy, an '88 CRX Si with SOHC ZC engine swap, has been traded for up for ANOTHER CR-X, the 5th to add to my "collection" of CRXs that I've had, now an '89 Si, with a D16Z6 SOHC V-TEC and GReddy turbo kit, in need of some SERIOUS TLC, with turbo charge pipes literally held together with duct tape, SMASHED modified DSM SMIC, internally shattered starter, bad brakes/rotors, a bad tranny (which ended up developing into a shattered differential) which of course had to be replaced, busted front motor mount, a very badly cracked windshield, missing rear wiper (which is very nice to have in this rainy state), messy interior, and faulty ignition, and still running the OBD0 wiring configuration (no VTEC engagement, and not as easy to tune as OBD1). After having her for about 6 months, and seein' how much trouble she's been, and after fixin' her up and tamin' her a bit, I decided to call her "Crazy Lucy". She's actually pretty agressive. It may not seem like it on the outside, but when pissed, she can be a real bitch! Arrrrgh! WOMEN! Hehe

I will learn to love this new one as much as I have my old ones. In the past, I used to be all about body kits and bench seats for spoilers. That was the young "Ricer" in me. I have learned alot in the past 10 years regarding these machines, and had, after a while, got tired of "All Show, No Go". However, I can tell you that this time I'm going with a clean JDM look, and this pretty much started with my new JDM factory CR-X VTEC decal across the rear center garnish and factory SiR emblem. So far the car sits pretty much a stock/sleeper look, hoping to stay that way in regards to any aftermarket exterior modifications, except for the already existing full 2.5" exhaust, secluded modified DSM intercooler tucked into the passenger wheel well, aftermarket suspension with Koni adjustible shocks, and then my new addition, brand new 15" Bronze Konig Helium, wrapped with Toyo Proxes 4, and added on my ZEX nitrous kit, and keepin' my ass protected from a crushing roofline in case I ever roll a Rex again (happened once before) by adding an Autopower Race Roll Bar. My future plans include a full JDM EF8 front end conversion. More shall follow, such as OBD0-OBD1 conversion, which is #1 on my list, and aside from that, I just dunno where to start. :)

So, in short, with things noted that I have added since my aquisition:

Exterior:

-JDM style Amber Corners. (ADDED)
-Genuine JDM Amber SiR side markers. (ADDED)
-JDM CR-X SiR Taillights. (ADDED)
-EDM Spoiler (an option for the '88-'92 UK and JDM Non-SiR EF models). (ADDED)
-15x6.5" Konig Helium lightweight wheels. (ADDED)
-205/50/15 Toyo Proxes 4 tires. (ADDED)

Interior:

-Autometer Gauges (boost/tach/oil pressure). (ADDED)
-Kognition Design Lumi Needles. (ADDED)
-Stock Recaro seats (comfy! and MINT! (no torn bolsters!)). (ADDED)
-Vitek Aluminum floor mats. (ADDED)
-Autopower Race Roll Bar. (ADDED)
-Aftermarket 3 point harnesses (already purchased, but soon to be installed). (ADDING)

Engine/Drivetrain:

(See Page 2 for new turbo upgrades)

-D16Z6 SOHC VTEC swap.

OLD TURBO SETUP:

-GReddy 15G Turbo Kit that came set stock at 5.5psi, but set at about 9psi (using an MBC), surprising on stock internals and stock injectors! (Not recommended!!!!). (REMOVED)
-Some cheapo BOV that's JB welded (cleanly) to the upper charge pipe, that, for a cheapo, performed surpisingly well! (REMOVED)
-Paxton FMU. (REMOVED)
-Missing link. (REMOVED)
-Modified DSM intercooler tucked in passenger fenderwell. (ORIGINALLY ADDED, THEN REMOVED FOR FMIC ON NEW TURBO SETUP)

NEW TURBO SETUP (as of 8/20/05):

-Chipped and socketed OBD1 P28 ECU. (ADDED FOR NEW TURBO SETUP)
-Garrett T3/T4 .57 trim turbo on custom log manifold with custom downpipe/dump tube.(ADDED)
-Greddy RS BOV. (ADDED)
-Tial style wastegate. (ADDED)
-AEM Fuel Rail.
-MBC set at 12psi. (ADDED)

-Zex Dry kit, 55 shot. (ADDED)
-Si Hybrid tranny. (ADDED)
-2.5" exhaust pipe to a 2.5" fart cannon fireball style muffler with 3" outlet (that's gonna be replaced with an HKS sport exhaust that I picked up recently and it's look more OEM without losing my piping diameter, with 2.5" inlet and twin 1.25" outlets). =)
-Aftermarket short throw. (ADDED)

Suspension:
-Adj. coilovers.
-Koni Adj. shocks.

Future Projects:
-Full JDM EF8 CR-X SiR Front End Conversion (hood, headlights, bumper/bumperlights, (already have fenders). I am going to get this when I have time and a place to do the conversion.
-Fully built D16Z6 SOHC VTEC Race-style (STREET LEGAL) Boost-Happy Engine (including, but not limited to: Aftermarket (unsure brand yet) OEM pistons (zero overbore)/Eagle rods/Wrist pins; micropolished crank; sleeved; Crower valves/springs/retainers). This also is not a matter of money at all, but more or less a matter of time.

UPDATE 7/14/05:

I've sold off my GReddy turbo kit and am going with something more aggressive. I bought a Garrett T3/T4 turbo (57 trim), will be mounted onto a custom tig welded log manifold, downpipe, and dump tube, Tial style wastegate, GReddy style BOV, new intercooler piping, JRC FMIC (gonna be anodized black); DSM 450cc injectors, and standalone fuel management (Uberdata most likely), while FINALLY gettin' my OBD0-OBD1 conversion done! Hope to have this all complete in the next week or 2! Depends on when my manifold gets completed.

Here's a link to the turbo goodies (minus this manifold and downpipe):
