I have a 1995 Ford Thunderbird LX. It's got a 4.6L V-8 engine. I just got it recently and it was entirely stock. It had a stock tape player, 4 6x8 speakers, and a lot of empty space in the trunk. I had to decide if I was going to go for SPL or SQ. I decided that since I valued my hearing, I would go with SQ. Step one was when I decided that the tape player had to go. I replaced that with a blaupunkt Key West. At the time I didn't know a lot about car stereo, and although most people don't like Blaupunkt, I haven't seen anything wrong with them. Second, I decided I needed some good bass. So I decided on getting a dual 10" sealed box, and 2 IDQ 10" subs. I threw that in the trunk. Next I needed to power the subs, they are rated at 200 rms, so I decided on the Hifonics Zeus 440. It puts out 220x2. I live by this amp. Eventually I think I will use it to power my fronts or rears and get a bigger sub amp, but for now it suits my purpose. Third I decided I needed new front speakers. I decided on Image Dynamics 5.25 coaxials because I didn't have the funding to get components worth the trouble of installing. They are great speakers, and are priced decently. You can notice a DRAMATIC improvement over the Stock 6x8s, and it was pretty easy to make an adapter to fit them in. I may have been able to squezzzzzzeeee in the 6.5 coaxials, but I didn't want to risk it, and 5.25 will give me better mids. Besides, I have 10" IDQs for all my bassing needs. I power the coaxials with a Zeus 400. This sucker puts out 100x2 at 4ohm (400x1 when brigged). For the rear fill I got the factory 6x8 speakers. I would take them out completly, but I left them there for my friends. Also, when I work on my car it often happens that I have to disconnect my amps, so the rear powered off of the HU atleast give me something to listen to when I can't finish my install in one day. I have recently added an Orion PSW 300. It's a great Parametric EQ/Line driver. I love it.
I am still stuck with the
factory in the rear. I want to replace these with IDQ 6.5 midbass, or I'll bring back the Coaxials from the front and put in a good set of components.
Check out my cool Hifonics Zeus 440. 220x2 at 4ohm mono.
This is a side-view of my 95' T-Bird
This is the main Head Unit console. You can see me CD-Player.
There's a picture of my rear 6x8. This a factory right now. Will upgrade later
This a front view of my T-Bird. Doesn't it look cool?
Thats my sub box with 2 IDQ 10" subs. Behind it is my Zeus 440 and Zeus 400 The strange colored bord you see is my replacement for the cheap factory cardboard spare cover. This gives the me a very strong floor, also, I don't have to worry about drilling into the gas tank when I need to bolt something to the floor.
Figured I'd take a picture of my Engine. 4.6L V-8 power...mmm.
Picture of my amps after my crude install before I worked on wiring.
This is my homemade 6x8 to 5.25 converter. I just took some 1/4 inch masonite and cut it to the size of the old speakers, cut out the center hole, drilled a few holes, and there you have it.
You can tell that most of the wires have been cleaned up here. I am planning on making some awsome custom amp racks, so I didn't want to go to much trouble making this look good for now. This is just a temporary spot untill I get time to make racks.
