The 3rd brakelight on the back of the cab doesn't have a cargo light, sadly. And sometimes it would be real nice to be able to see in the bed at night, or have some extra light for hooking up a trailer and stuff, so I figured I'd add some bed lights.

For the lamps I used some backup lights that I found at AutoZone. Backup lights should work good since they don't have a solid beam. The light is spread all over. I glued a little plastic block to the lights so that they would sit in the hole crooked and aim out of the hole at an angle. I wanted them to light up the bed as well as aim backwards to provide a little light when I'm loading my 4wheelers on the trailer at night.

To get the pockets out of the bed, just push down on the pocket toward the ground, then pop the top out and lean it out; it takes a little jiggling around. I used a Dremmel tool to cut the holes in the pockets. Once you are ready to re-install the pockets, you put pockets back in the bed, drop the wires through, and then screw the lights in. The pockets won't go in the bed if you mount the lights first. I also added some black Silicone glue around the edges of the light to make it a little more solid and water tight.

In the passenger side storage compartment I mounted a SPDT switch, which has 3 positions. ON, OFF, and ON when the tailgate is opened; just like how your cab dome light works. I mounted a door pin switch in the tailgate jamb.

It all seems to work great. I turned the bed lights ON once it got dark outside. I was very impressed with the results. Even though it is black, the light reflects out of the plastic "pockets" and it lights the bed up real well from front to back.

(Update)
I've had these lights installed for several months now and they have proven to be very useful, but the lights I used are a little overkill. They're a little too bright sometimes. You could do this mod a lot easier and cheaper if you used something smaller like a set of license plate lamps that have a base that could be surface mounted in the pocket and not have to Dremmel anything. You can get license plate lights at most automotive stores.

Here's an updated picture I took in the dark. The bedlights work great if you have a tonneau or a camper shell.

These are some of the most insane mod's on a vehicle I have ever seen. I like how clean your work is. Your truck looks like a special edition straight from toyota!! Nice work man. 5*****'s all the way!! Our exterior is similar, and your look is close to what i'm trying to accomplish. Where did you get the one piece drive shaft?
