Well she couldn't take any more.
After 4000mi on the Procharger build, I purchased some 32# fuel injectors to put on.
My thought was these would be tuned by my SAFC2, and the stock ECM would compensate for them at idle and under closed-loop operation. At the same time that I installed my injectors, I also installed a smaller supercharger pulley (more boost) measuring 2.95" (vs the 3.45" that's on there now).
Install went without issue, had some minor fuel leaks w/ the new injectors but eventually got everything squared away and fired 'er up. Car started, ran, and drove fine, the ECM learned the new injectors like a champ, and my SAFC took over at open loop operation as it should've.
The problem came when I took an on-ramp and decided to see what the new pulley gave me. I got her up to speed (70mph) really quick and wrapped the tach only to about 4000 rpm where I saw 10psi of boost. I was seeing 10psi at redline prior to the pulley upgrade.
I let out the clutch to let the RPMs fall while I put it in 5th (from 3rd) and the car died on the highway. Dead. Rolling at 70mph. No power steering, no power brakes. I push the clutch in, still rolling, and try to start it. No go. I crank the wheel to get to the next exit an manage to get off the road and pull over. After some time I got it started back up and limped her home.
I pulled the plugs and here's what I found.
I worked on the problem for a couple of days, swapping in the old injectors, and putting on the old pulley. Still she didn't want to run for me.
A friend of mine, who's a Saturn Technician, came over from Eau Claire with a new ignition module and a compression tester on a rainy Saturday. We tested compression and cylinder #2 was leaking (not a cylinder that had any weird outcomes w/ my plugs, odd). We took the head off and didn't see any valves stuck, so I eventually had it towed to his dealership so he could work on it. In about 5 minutes he had it diagnosed as a blown piston ring.
So, 2.2 Ecotec modders, beware the piston rings, they are not tough!
5/15/07: Got the car back w/ a new 2.2L ecotec in it! Yay! The shop's exhaust guy was out sick for quite some time so unfortunately the 2.5" dp & header were unable to be installed, but the Eibachs are on, check 'em out!
The new 8000k true HID kit went on over Memorial Day weekend as well:
A good example of why HIDs are meant for projector lenses - I pity anybody who meets me on the road!
