twakeman's 1960 Land Rover Defender TeriAnn's "The Green Rover" is a 1960 Land Rover Dormobile owned since 1978. I have driven The Green Rover East West from coast to coast, North to South from Jasper BC to the Mexican border. The longest I've camped non-stop in the Rover while on a trip was 3 months. She was rebuilt to be a long distance expedition vehicle and her design has been proved through extensive rock crawling, deep wading, deep desert sand, wet clay, mud, snow and on long distance camping trips.

The Green Rover is powered by a Ford 302 from a 1970 Mustang with the low compression heads (so I can run regular) and EFI from a 1993 Mustang 5.0 HO. The gearbox is a Borg Warner T-18 with granny first gear. Behind the gearbox is a series Land Rover transfer case with an Ashcroft high ratio kit installed. This all means 4.09:1 at the axle in top gear, down to 69.83:1 at the axle in low range first gear. The 33.3 inch dia B.F. Goodrich mud terrains see 65 mph at about 2,650 RPM.

The rear axle assembly is a Salisbury (Dana 60 built under license) with an ARB air locker and upgraded axles from Great Basin Rovers installed. The front axle assembly consists of Seriestrek 24 spline front axles, a Truetrac carrier with the more robust 4.75:1 R&P gears.  The front drive shaft was custom built by Great Basin Rovers with higher angle yolks and a longer slip joint.   Front drum brakes have been replaced by disc brakes from Rocky Mountain Expedition Equip, Ltd. Springs have thin sheets of ultra high density plastic which almost completely eliminates leaf to leaf friction. The stock bushings have been replaced by greasable poly bushings from Great Basin Rovers.

twakeman's 1960 Land Rover Defender A Dormobile is a Camper conversion with side hinged lifting roof. When the roof is errected there is 7 feet 8 inches of vertical space inside. The roof has 2 large windows plus a large vent. This picture shows The Green Rover camped along Kane Creek canyon near Moab Utah.

The Green Rover has 3 fuel tanks, 2 front underseat plus a rear tank for a total capacity of 42 gallons. Also built in at the frame level is a 5 gallon propane tank, 15 gallon water tank and 2.5 gallon air tank. Onboard air for operating the ARB locker and for airing up tyres is provided by a Quick Air 2 12V pump. There are two batteries, one of which is a deep cycle that is isolated to run the rear electrics when the ignition switch is off.

I've always liked your Rover TerriAnn, but you know as well as I that Defenders weren't made in 1960 ;)
