Update: July 18, 2009

I got a fair amount of work done today.  First I grabbed a wire brush and other tools hit the trunk floor hard.  I pulled off the seam sealer, removed the pan plugs and wire brushed the big crusty chunks from the floor.

While in the trunk working I took a good look at the inner fenders and contemplated the difference between the surface shape of the passenger and driver fenders.  My mind flashed back to a conversation with the older gentleman who painted the car in 1992.  He mentioned that one fender was full of "putty" but that was the just of the conversation.  Knowing that the car will be media blasted I grabbed a 3 lb. hammer and give the inner driver side fender a wack.  Cracks appeared on the outside of the fender.  Installed the wire wheel on my electric drill and set out to find out how much filler was to be found.  It seems that the car was hit on the driver's rear and the entire fender from door to quarter extension is filled with a skim coat to 3/8" of filler.

I will let the pictures speak for themselves...

On a better note... I removed the headliner as well as a few other things including interior "A" pillar trim.

Update: June 4, 2009

I have had a few questions about my plan of attach on the car so I wanted to add some details to answer question.

I am doing a total 'restification' so the car will appear stock at first look but if you know your old C Bodies then you will be able to spot things that are factory pieces added or other small changes made to the car.

Interior additions include:

- '68 Chrysler 300 buckets with headrests and buddy seat covered to look like the stock Fury interior. The 300 buddy seat has a cigarette lighter for the rear seat passengers which would be nice to have in the world of cell phones and GPS equiptment.

- 1968 column shift Tilt/telescoping steering column VERY rare and hard to find piece

- factory AM/FM radio (once it get it here)

Exterior info:

I am stripping the car to a rolling shell (no engine/transmission/interior/wiring/glass/etc) to have it media blasted to removed all of the old paint.  It has had minor paint repairs and one repaint in 1992.  Once that is done I will tackle the rust repair (including trunk floors and at the base of the rear window and lower rear rear fenders).   At this time the plan is to replace the vinyl top and duplicate the stock side striping.  Repaint will be in the stock FF1 green but will likely have a little pearl added to be different ;-)

Suspension/drivetrain Info:

Since I plan to drive the car when it is done, all modifications made are to bring the car up to current standards.  Major upgrades include:

- 73 c body disc brake conversion (google it) along with a MC/prop valve/lines upgrade

- New upgraded torsion bars and rear leaf spring/modern shock

- eventually the 383/727 will get rebuilt.  At this time I am considering a 383 stroker using a 440 crank and off the shelf pistons for a torquie 432 ci (or so)  and will look stock on the outside.

Thanks for the questions and I am glad to help as I can.

More pics of the rust behind the rear bumper.  Ohio winters and salty roads did some work here.

March 17, 2009

Took advantage of another nice March day and removed the other patch panel from the rear passenger fender.  Here are some pics of what was hidden behind the sheet metal.

More work done, much more to go!

The third build sheet found behind the rear seat back. The one under the rear seat bottom is long gone.

I am in the process of tearing down the Fury to begin a "restification."  I am keeping most everything stock but will make changes for safety and drivability.

The following pictures are the result of my work on the past two Saturdays.  Hope you enjoy it...

Just looked at your pictures, especially the ones where you are stripping down the car. Why are you taking off grilles, bumpers, etc? Is it to get to the rust underneath/behind them or are you planning to do something with the parts you took off, such as rechroming, or-? I'd be curious to know as I'd like to learn more about how I can bring those parts on my car back to like-new condition. Thanks.
