Here it is with the lift all done.
For my lift, I had purchased it piece by piece from various places. I decided to install the rear suspension first. First problem I encountered was that both bolts on the rear leaf springs were rusted into the sleeves and could not be removed. I had to cut them both off with a sawzall. However, the passenger side bolt broke the nut's weld inside the frame. I had to cut a hole in the frame bracket to be able to get the bolt out, and I held a new one in there with a wrench while I tightened a new bolt in. Here's the nice hole I had to cut:
I put on a Dana 44 rear axle from an International Scout and had Six States set the new 4:10 ratio gearing for me. Here is what the rear looked like all bolted on:
The hardest part about installing the Rusty's Long Arm kit was that I had already welded rock rails to the unibody frame the previous year, and one of the welds was in the way when I went to mount the frame brackets for the long arm mounts. I had to modify the brackets by cutting them to fit around my rock rail welds and I had to drill new holes in the brackets to go through the frame. I also installed my new NP231 transfer case with the slip yoke eliminator. Here's the new cross-member and transfer case installed:
I picked a poor week to put the lift on outside cause it rained in the middle of the week. Check out how wet and miserable it was to work on it:
The rest of the installation went very smooth. Here are pictures of the long arm kit, Tom Woods custom driveshaft, and my new steering:
When I finished the front suspension, the front sat about 2" lower than the rear. To even it out, I put in 2" spacers in the front, and it sits great now. In the first picture you can see the coil spacer, and in the second one you can see my tie rod conversion kit, aluminum bumpstops, and the new track bar:
I had to put on mud flaps in order to pass safety inspections and also so the cops would stop giving me tickets. I bought these quick release mud flaps from Rocky Road Outfitters and they are pretty great.
I had to come up with a new sway bar setup since my lift was so big, so I cut the sway bar links in half and welded a little extension to make it long enough. Here's the finished product:
After installing the long arm kit, I had to cut off the factory lower control arm mounts. I cut them off and then painted them black. Here is the result:
Steering Upgrade After I installed my 8.5" lift and 35" tires, my steering setup needed to be improved. After much research, I decided to get the ORO U-turn steering kit. I couldn't be happier with it. It took me about 5 hours to install one evening, and it only took me that long because one of the tie rod ends was stuck in the pitman arm and had to be drilled out. I don't have any pics of the installation, but just of the final product:
My buddy and I went Jeeping on a local trail and had some fun.
