227,000 miles. as of 10-10-2008
The daily driver to beat all daily drivers! I picked this car because it had everything i need in a "point A-to-B" car. Its not a show car or a race car, but i have put 100,000 miles on it in less than 3 years. its surprisingly fast for a 4 cylinder, with my only mods being a k&n air filter, and a lightweight aluminum flywheel from SPSWEBPAGE.com I had a SPEC stage 1 pressure plate but it broke after about 60,000 miles so i put on a stock plate, stock disc, SPS flywheel and it shifts buttery smooth, never slipped once. it got towed by a dumbass who dragged it for several miles until i could see the diff from the outside!!! i got a new trans (mp3 1996) from a "cut-away" display model for a good deal and put it in. it has a stock header being a '92, (also the last year for a stock oil pressure gauge) and stock exhaust. This was the top model for '92, so it has a sunroof, leather, spoiler, painted bumpers, variable assist power steering, ABS, drivers airbag, 15" alloys, rear disc brakes, rear sway bar, DOHC engine, and the mp3 trans. I also added an auto dimming compass mirror with external temp display, and a black plastic cam cover, both from later model saturns. The stereo is all used, some from e bay, some from friends. a 2000 model pioneer cd player sending the highs to an MRV-f407 which then sends power to 2 alpine 6 1/2 co-axial cheap speakers, and 2 Infinity reference series speakers. the lows run from the head to an alpine mrv-1507 v12 amp, then to 2 12" type-R dual 4 ohm in a sealed box.
Check out a video of these subs in action at www.realmofexcursion.com go to videos, alpine, type-r, 12", rocbola
My new setup with matching V12 amps, MRV-1507 on the subs, pushing 900 watts RMS and 1500 max. the four channel is a MRV-F407 pushing 60 watts RMS per channel, and 120 max. crossover is set around 80 hz. The Cap in the background is a Power Acoustic 5 farad model with voltage display and blue neon.
Pioneer deh-something or other. "swimming dolphin" organic display. 2000 model. it has a cd player, but i use the aux input for my ipod.
The old set up with the cheap 4-channel
Rear speakers (alpine 6 1/2) w/foam baffle
Front speakers (infinity reference 6 1/2 with 45 degree angle tweeters) w/foam baffle
12" Alpine type-r dual 4 ohm in sealed box 1.25 cu. ft. before displacement per chamber.
stock rusty header
auto dimming compass mirror w/ outdoor temp disp. not offered on the '92, but its easy to install.
If you are a true saturn lover, you are wondering why there is a black cam cover on a '92. very observant! but the EGR is a giveaway of the '92 engine w/ a '98 cam cover.
MRV-1507
The outside of the car with a yamaha in the way. (not digging too deep for gas...)
(the old setup) Gold plated side-post terminal on stock battery with 4awg power wire. (fused at 80 amp, then onto distribution block)
(the new battery) Optima Redtop with one 4 gauge wire going to the engine ground and one 4 gauge wire going to the body ground, one 4 gauge power going to the amps and the stock 8 gauge for the alternator and the car's power dist box. next power upgrades: 4 gauge for all connections, and a secondary battery in the trunk on an isolated circuit.
The Newest Additions include a pair of High Intensity Discharge (Xenon) headlights, more Dynamat, and my custom air intake. Keeping with the spirit of the saturn (inexpensive, but effective), i attached the stock saturn intake elbow to an intake pipe that a fellow honda technician had given me years ago and i had in my toolbox. I bought the filter from autozone for 25 dollars, and used a hack saw to cut the end of the pipe at the perfect angle for the filter. I also spent 9 bucks on the crankcase filter, so i have a functional intake for less than $37!!! Its of course not as good as the $250 AEM cold air, which i originally planned on getting, but after many streets in my neighborhood flooded last month, i decided to keep the filter up high for better functionality. i need to build a box to isolate it from the upper radiator hose heat!
By the way, i did notice a big difference in performance as soon as i put this on. It adds some engine noise to the cabin above 3000 RPM, but its worth it!
The HID headlight were such a good purchase. (i will add pictures soon) I would recommend them to any saturn owner. I have seen some cars with Xenon upgrades that looked awful! I was nervous to find out how they would look on a saturn, and i was pleasantly surprised. Just dont get the super blue or a wierd color, i got the white, and they have a blue tint anyway. They arent just for looks, they offer me the ability to see farther at night, they reflect off road signs more, keeping me safer, and they increase the ability of other drivers to see me, also keeping me safer. I find people are less likely to pull out in front of me when they are on.
