List of things to come: (Not necessarily in this order) Updated 5/2/07
First things first.
The Body and Frame need to be addressed. The frame is intact and strong, but it has alot of surface rust that I want to stop before it becomes a problem. The body has a few areas which need immediate attention such as the floor pan on the passenger side, and the quarter panels. Next from there are the fenders and tackling any remaining surface rust. For the rust I plan on using chemical rust removers and vigorous sanding. When it's cleared up and patch panels are in place, I'll use POR-15 where appropriate to seal the deal.
After the body is taken care of, I have to prevent it from happening again. For the undercarriage, I want to get some of that rubberized rhino spray for that since I've heard good things. For the Trunk, I'll paint it with POR-15 and then put new insulation, sound deadner, and carpeting over that. Same with the cabin area. Before the insulation, sound deadner and carpeting go in the cabin though, I'm having Bucket Seats fitted. Then new weather stripping will be installed for the windows and trunk.
After the important stuff is taken care of, and all rust prevention is out of the way, I'm taking the car to a body shop and having them grind down the molding clip pins behind and around the C-Pillar and rear window, and along the bottom of the body.
Now the fun part. At this stage, the car will be mostly sanded down and primed for paint. But so I don't mess up a perfectly good paint job, this is where I'm going to get started on the engine and drivetrain. Once the Motor and Transmission are pulled out, the first thing to go will be the Transmission itself. I plan on finding a used or refurbished TH200-4R, and replacing the TH400 with that. Reason being that it's a 4 speed transmission vs 3 speed, and it has overdrive. To compliment the Pontiacs good low end grunt, I'll see about getting a towing package torque converter.
After the engine is taken out and disassembled, I'll have it sent out to be hot tanked and inspected by a machinist. If the engine checks good, I'll have the cylinders honed and have it sent back as is. If it needs it, they'll be bored out 0.003in. From there the rebuild will be done with a new crank shaft, new pistons, piston rods, and bearings. The top will have a mild cam with the stock heads (cleaned and rebuilt) and an Edelbrock performance intake manifold topped with a Holley vacuum 600-650cfm Q-Jet. Upgrade the Alternator, and just re-use the stock ignition and distributor.
While the engine is out, I'll take advantage of that to take care of the front suspension. Tighter Springs, shocks, and polyurithane bushings. If I can, I'll tighten up the steering because I don't like how buttery it is.
Engine dress up will most likely consist of taking the old valve covers, cleaning them up and painting the outside their appropriate color. Since the old air box won't fit ontop of the Q-Jet, I'll probably have to get one of those fancy air filters with the chrome on it. All of the unecessary wiring and hoses that are all over the place will be tossed if the car doesn't need them (read: emissions equipment goes OUT) and finally, a serpentine pulley system with a set of electronic fans on the radiator (like the ones on my Caprice).
Once the engine is done, and everything is set... finally time for paint. I'm thinking instead of what the poll says, I'll paint the car a solid tan, and paint all the molding the same color (with the exception of the Bumpbers, headlight & tail light bezels, and the grill border). The grill itself will be painted black. The name badges on the fenders will be taken off along with the one on the trunk lid. The trunk will instead have an arrowhead below the keyhole. This last one I'm not sure on, but the quarter panels will have the word "Warchief" on them similar to the '94-96 Chevy Impala SS. Color matched to the car of course.
