ggbern's 1979 Fiat Spider austin, TX - 2 AS BOUGHT BEFORE RESTORATION
Bought on Ebay from San Diego in May 2004. Shipped to Austin, Tx. Have been slowly restoring it since arrival. The body is in excellent condition - only rust on trunk bead for gasket and two quarter size holes in the floor pan behind the drivers seat fixed with a little bondo (obviously this is a true California Car).

With regard to the power-train so far have rebuilt the transmission to fix first gear and cleaned up the engine. Replaced the coil, distributor, wires, plugs and have it tuned and running smoooooth! Compression is in spec and no smoke so have decided not to crack the engine and rebuild at this time!

Reinstalled After Cleanup

Completely gutted the interior and replaced the floor insulation and installed new carpet. Replaced the front seats with 1998 Miata seats obtained from a local salvage yard. Recovered the rear seat with the modification to include 6x9 speakers in the rear seat back to complement the 6.5 rounds installed in the front kickpanels. Did extensive rewiring of the various wiring harnesses to eliminate voltage drops and intermittent connections. Restored the Dash, Instrument Panel, and Console. Installed a 200W Pioneer Sound System.

Rebuilt the complete suspension system and most of the exhaust system. Currently have doors off (as seen in the pix above) and disassembled. Have fabricated all new door panels ready to be installed after the painting. Trunk lid and the hood are removed, and along with the two doors have been stripped, primed, and block sanded. Next step is to strip the rest of the car body and prime, however the weather has been wet and uncooperative for the last two weeks. Am itching to finish the prep and get the paint on... will be Chrysler Inferno Red Clearcoat when done...with black accents to match the black rag-top.

Once the Engine and Tranny were re-installed, couldn't wait to try it out so took it for a few miles on the back roads sans doors, hood, trunk. Accelerates nicely and Purrrrrs like a kitten... Gonna be a blast to drive around this spring!
