IZC07's 1981 Datsun 310

During the restoration of the body, i have been thinking about the engine I want to replace.

Can you believe this little engine here, only has approximately 66,000 miles on it? And when you start it up, you got no minute to lose, cuz it starts up just like a brand new car. The car does 40-50 miles to the gallon, and in CA, that is a GOOD thing right?

Did some photoshop of my 310 lowered and on some sick Euro wheels:

The engine was previously swapped, with a 1980 datsun coupe, the only minor issue is that during the tranny mounting, the gears were not compliant with the new engine. So as a result the gears go in in reverse order. 1st is bottom right, and 5th in the upper left. Crazy huh? I learned to drive a stick with this car, so now you can imagine. ANyhow, this car runs and all. So i figured... that while the engine was still running, I won't do anythign to the engine, yet at the same time, think about the following ideas for an engine:

Information pertaining to several FWD engines.

What does Neo VVL stand for?
Nissan Ecology Orientated Variable Valve Lift and Timing

The VE (Neo VVL) series of engines is Nissan's answer to Honda's VTEC. The two systems are nearly identical. They use the same concept of multiple cam lobes to provide a low rpm cam ideal for torque and a high rpm cam optimized for hp. The only difference in the Nissan system is that the intake and exhaust cams are triggered indepedently for a flatter, more consistent power band. You can read more about the VTEC system here.

How many different VE motors are there?
There are five (5) VE motors.
SR16VE - 173hp 5 speed Manual 97-2001
SR16VE N1 - 197hp 5 speed Manual 97-98
SR20VE - 187hp CVT 6 speed Auto 97-2001
SR20VE - 204hp 6 speed Manual 2001-Present
SR20VET - 276hp AWD Turbo 2002-Present

How much power does the VE have?
SR16VE - 173hp @ 7800rpm / 119lb torque @ 7200rpm
SR16VE N1 - 197hp @ 7800rpm / 134lb torque @ 7600rpm
SR20VE - 187hp @ 7000rpm / 145lb torque @ 6000rpm
SR20VET - 276hp @ 6400rpm / 228lb torque @ 3200rpm

How much do they cost?
SR16VE - $1000-$1600
SR16VE N1 - $3000+ good luck finding one*
SR20VE - $1000-$2500
SR20VET - unknown
*Only 500 of these engines are thought to have been produced.
**These are average prices based on availability and engine condition. Actual prices may vary.

What are the origins of these motors?
SR16VE - 1.6L VVL motor found in the Nissan Sunny Lucino VZ-R, Sunny GT and Pulsar VZ-R.
SR16VE N1 - 1.6L VVL motor found in the Nissan Pulsar VZ-R N1 and Pulsar VZ-R N1 SSS.
SR20VE - 2.0L VVL motor found in the Nissan Primera (Infiniti G20 bodystyle), Bluebird, Wingroad, and Autobacs Garaiya.
SR20VET - 2.0L turbocharged VVL motor found in the Nissan X-Trail SUV, and Trailrunner Concept Car

Oh, my God, the Datsun 310gx 1981 model was my first car and just about the best car I ever owned. I was 19 and bought it around 1990 and put it through hell! I just wanted to see it again is why I came across this site... Oh, the hydrolic clutch was so smoothe for its time and it was soooo easy to install a new clutch in this car... It was truly unique!!!! So many sweet "bells and whistles" for "81". I miss that car and want to get another one! I was stupid and ended up trading it in for a really piece of shit mazda 626 just because the starter went out and I freaked out about it! God I wish I still had it now.... I now have a 1997 Chevy Lumina for the past 11 years and its the 2nd best car I have ever owned and also have a 2005 convertable pt cruizer, I love it. It's really cool but havn't had it long enough to know if it's a really good car yet or not I still wonder if anyone has that little Datsun and it wouldn't supprise me if it's still on the road! Thanks,Mike

Nice Datsun. I love datsuns, and yours has the A series engine. That is a cool motor. Fit twin Weber DCOE carburetors and a cam, and it will feel and run like a million bucks.
What are your plans?
I also have Datsun cars, a 710 and a 610. My B210 got stolen, so later on I will get another one, love A series motors.
Jaime.

Whats up, I also forgot to tell you that I was on ebay and I found some 2 sick ass books for the n10 model nissans straight from the factory. 1 is a competition tune up manual that was published in 1982, this book covers everything from performance curves, to how to stiffen the body by welding braces on the lower rear arms, to dual sidedraft carb setups, to how to grind down the cam for optimum performance, this book is 57 pages long. The 2nd book is all datsun/nissan sports option parts that you could buy from nissan back in the day. This book was published book in 1982. It is 17 pages full of aftermarket nissan parts for the nissan N10 series. This book covers Engine tune up parts, engine mounting parts, carburetor parts, exhaust parts, electric parts, oil cooler parts, oil catch tank parts, clutch parts, transmission parts, final drive parts, road wheel parts, brake parts, suspension parts-dirt and road applications, etc parts/racing seats/roll bar/ mud flaps/tach/kill switchand so much more. These books are amazing.
