Now it's time for a new chapter in the late Ol' Blues journey... On June 25, 2006, the Jeep went under the knife. It was time for a complete frame off restoration! That's right, Ol' Blue is no longer blue... but a rougher, tougher bed liner orange!
The rebuild took only 51 days; not too shabby for my first ever. Everything was rebuilt except for the transmission and transfer case which continue to run like a champ. And now for the picture book story...
On day one the engine was completely disconected and yanked with the help of a cherry picker and my dad. And oh boy was that engine dirty as hell!
Once the engin was out, I decided to take off the roll bar to have a look at the rust I knew was looming beneath. When I first started this project, I had only planned on doing the engine, but once I saw this rust, I knew something had to be done.
I could never really picture my Jeep as just a rolling chasis before, but man does it look goofy!
The block is here, shown bored .030 over with the new 4.0 cylinder head decked .020. The 4.0 Head on a 4.2 block should give about 40 extra HP! Not a bad gain for 300 bucks. New pistons and rings were used with the old rods being cleaned and shot peaned. Also, the crank was ground .010 because of excessive wear from the bearings.
The block build went pretty smooth with a couple added goodies. A Centerforce II Clutch with centrifugal weights, original HEI distributor and a shiny new Edlebrok Ceramic Coated header! Man doesn't she look GOOD!
And now for the biggest visual change of Ol' Blues life...
