The next big thing
We go through our home or car audio lives, upgrading component after component in search of audio bliss. We improve every facet of our audio system, including head units, interconnects and even acoustic treatment. We improve accuracy while trying to avoid a clinical sound, we improve musicality while trying to avoid a sound that is euphonic. The question every serious car audio SQ competitor or audiophile asks himself or herself is "what should I change to get closer to realism", or more accurately, "what is holding me back from realism".
Unobtainium
The Holy Grail of audio is realistic musical presentation and is considered unobtainable. This is where the listener is led to believe they are at the actual location of the recording listening to the actual instruments.
Eureka
Occasionally something comes along and changes ones perceptions, call it an epiphany.
What if, the thing that is holding the system back from realism was not hardware but software? The epiphany mentioned is my experience with the Kimber Kable recordings made using their heart shaped IsoMike ? baffle.
A large step forward, no steps back
With the Kimber Kable IsoMike ? disk (I purchased a bunch at CES 2005), there is no desire to look back. The recorded images are incredibly accurate, the tonality is spot on and the transient response is excellent. The scale and power of a choral group can be impressive and virtually impossible to capture. I found that the IsoMike ? recording made it easy for me to believe I was at the recording session in a large, acoustically lively hall. Audiophile recordings tend to record obscure and so-so performances. Ray Kimber has captured spirited music recorded from live performances at Weber State University. The CD/SACD is recorded in a sampling format with short snippets of songs... yet the songs were emotionally involving and are presented with exceptional artistry. This is the elusive CD/SACD that can satisfy the head with technology and the heart with inspiring music.

The IsoMike ? makes all other techniques of recording live music obsolete.
