ME AND MY GTO

The award winning GTO began production in 1990 and like the Galant GTO of the early 70s, represents the cutting edge of Mitsubishi Motors' high performance technology. Marketed outside of Japan as the 3000GT, the GTO,
Great cost performance
high response handling and driveability,
advanced futuristic styling,
high power output engine,V6, 3000 DOHC, 24-valve twin-turbocharged, intercooler engine which generates an astounding 280ps/6000rpm and 42.4kg./2500rpm
A super sports car in every sense, the GTO was extensively equipped for record breaking performance.
Its myriad of features include Mitsubishi's all-wheel control system comprising of 4WD, 4WS (4-wheel Steering), 4IS (4-wheel Independent Suspension), 4ABS (4-wheel Anti-lock Brake System) and ECS (Electronic Control Suspension).

Since its introduction in 1989, Mitsubishi proved that it would become a global contender in the world of automotive racing. However, like many other sports cars, its high price and high maintenance requirements turned away many buyers, ultimately causing Mitsubishi to discontinue it. The GTO, discontinued in 1999, has joined the many other Japanese supercars in automotive valhalla, including the Nissan 300ZX, the Toyota Supra, and the Mazda RX-7

When the car first appeared in 1989, it was actually introduced as the HSX. It is unknown what specifications the HSX had exactly, but it wouldn't be unsafe to assume it had the same specs as the 1991 debut. In fact, the HSX almost looks like a carbon copy of 1991 model, aside from the fact that the rear spoiler is a three piece, and its ends are connected with the side of the trunk.

The first generation GTO, which was manufactured from 1991-1993, had the same body and low spoiler for all 3 trim levels. What makes it easy to tell this apart from the other models is the flip-up lights. The low spoiler has a built in brake light.

The second generation, produced from 1994-1998, had a slightly redesigned body. The rear plate with the "Mitsubishi" text was replaced with a "GTO" (3000GT) text, and the Mitsubishi text and trim names were placed on the left and right sides of the bumper. Again, all trims had the same bodies and spoilers, with the exception of the VR-4. The 1994-1996 VR-4's had the old low spoiler, but the 1997-1998 VR-4's had a new and redefined rear spoiler. It was huge 3 piece arch across the rear of the trunk, similar to that of the Eclipse GSX (whose spoiler was derived from the GTO), and has a brake light on the underside of it. The front spoiler was redefined with more curves, and projector headlights replaced the flip-up lights of the first generation. Small, circular fog and reverse lights replaced the square ones of the first generation.

These years also saw the introduction of the GTO Spyder, a hardtop convertible which was offered in the SL and VR-4 trim levels. Due to the nature of a hardtop convertible, a unique spoiler was created for the Spyder. However, the Spyder was not too popular and was discontinued after being offered for only 2 years (1995 and 1996).
The last and final model, 1999, had a completely revamped front and rear spoiler. It was styled quite aggressively, with a sharper looking front spoiler, that gives the car an almost European touch to it. The rear text plate was completely thrown out, and a plain black vent looking plate with the Mitsubishi logo replaces it. The conservative look of the older models are nowhere to be seen in the '99 VR-4 model, whose rear wing spoiler gives the car a whole different feel. The 3 piece spoiler becomes standard for the GT and SL trims.
