Cruise Control [ASCD Automatic Speed Cotrol Device]
.
Overview
Maxima Cruise Control System parts, function:
- Control Wire attached on throttle body (TB) axle and Vacuum Diaphragm.
- Vacuum Diaphragm actuating the Control Wire
- Vacuum Pump ; (Electric motor powered) affecting the system vacuum
- Air valve and Air Release valve controlling the Vacuum chamber & Vacuum Diaphgram via a vacuum rubber hose.
- Control Logic -module regulating the Vacuum Pump supply voltage, valves
- Electrical Inputs from ECU; Engine rpm, speed, and user switches to the Control Logic -module
Throttle Body control wires
The mechanical wires connected to Throttle Body has rubber endbits shielding the wiring from dust. These shields are worn or hardened in any ten year old car. The rubber parts may get clogged and jam the throttle. Replace or repair; here they are reconditioned and tied with self vulcanizing rubbertape.

Cruise Control Death Trap WARNING:
Maxima people have complained of lost cruise control. The medicine for them has been resoldering the cruise ctrl PCB printed circuit board. After PCB re-solder, all is ? well. ... Now I read that this very same ctrl board MAY cause sudden FULL THROTTLE, ANY TIME!!!
The system level design problem lies with the ASCD power switch - it is NOT a real power ON/OFF -switch. While that main switch OFF-position, the ASCD logic still may go haywire, and deliver power to the actuator. This results in surprise FULL THROTTLE. It may happen for example while reversing on a parking lot.

Cruise Control Schema; Note the ASCD CANCEL -switch at center: not to be found in my max. At right: schema for add on Safety Relay Connection (red).
The Safety Relay is not critical on manual transmission as clutch may always be pressed to disconnect engine. However, functional safety is cutting all power off when brake is applied [from actuator motor!].
At the right hand pic [F]: use ½ or one amp fuse. The diodes are necessary if both inputs are used (Using control input from TCU is an option). Safety Relay may be located at engine bay or inside dashboard. The suggested add-on Safety Relay is always the last word: whatever short circuits happens, even faulty ASCD ability to move gas pedal is now limited only to D. Also brake pedal disconnects actuating pump, regardless of ASCD logic.

Box opened from top corner, PCB - displayed both sides.
Found just out that -93 ASCD has 8 pin connector - contrast that to -94 schema with 10pin connector... Here the PCB taken from under dash. Btw, my PCB was in excellent condition; no needs for resolder. High Quality!

Troubleshooting:
All starts from checking charge voltage.
Next check ASCD -related fuses; see page 5
Checkout Your Actuator and connection to TB:
When actuator connector pins 3&4 are wired to +12V and pin 1 is set to gnd, actuator pump starts and keeps on, release valve is closed. Four seconds later, throttle is stuck at 4/5. Take connections off, pressure is released and throttle travels to idle position.
The last resort is to check all switches, then open the control logic -module, resolder and retest.

AirBag the KILLER
According news mags, Airbags are good exchange currency for mechanics: check out if you still have an airbag. (Luckily my -93 maxima did never have it - I'd hate to drive 15 yr old shaky ammo between my fingers...)

Airbag fumes; http://www.airbaginjury.com/airbag_fumes.htm
Automobile airbags use a chemical compound that is so toxic that even small amounts can kill. Yet trucks loaded with hundreds of pounds of sodium azide routinely travel the nation's highways, and discarded airbags sit like environmental time bombs in the nation's auto junkyards, a University of Arizona scientist says.

Dangerous Switches
Expanded investigation; Ford
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/06/16/ford.vehicles/index.html
The $20.57 switch shuts off the cruise control when the driver firmly steps on the brakes. The switch is located under the hood of the vehicle and is attached to the brake master cylinder on one end and wired to the cruise control on the other.
On most of its models, Ford designed the switch to be powered -- or "hot" -- at all times, even when the vehicle is off and the key is removed from the ignition.
Inside the switch, a thin film barrier separates brake fluid from the switch's electrical components. Investigators say fires can occur when the film cracks and brake fluid from the master cylinder seeps into the electrical side of the switch.
Ford has already recalled more than 1 million vehicles in two separate recalls to replace the switch. ...switch was installed in a total of 16 million vehicles, far beyond what was recalled.

A faulty cruise control switch has been blamed for 1,500 fires. In Lithonia, Ga., a neighbor photographed a Ford F-150 going up in flames along with a nearby garage.
"If the part was not available (eh?), the interim fix was to disconnect the cruise control, but some owners did not want to do this. “We have heard reports of people not wanting the switch disconnected because they don’t want to lose speed-control functionality,” Mr. Sherwood said."
---> Ford ha$ never heard of a invention called relay, ha$ it???

Carfax has been balooney for 10 yrs:
..."Some Carfax customers sued the company in 2004 after discovering Carfax wasn't searching the complete police accident records from 22 states and the District of Columbia. The lawsuit claimed Carfax started misleading customers in 1998, after the company lost access to accident records from all 50 states through the National Crime Insurance Bureau database. Without that data, Carfax reports weren't showing some serious crashes..."
