How To Prepare for a real COLD winter
Dressed for -40 winter and 80mph storms released out by VG30E horseshow
Front shields give cover against winter freeze; enhanced LH pic for clarity:
- Radiator shield used only below -20, this is UGLY. Installed later inside, unseen, see RH pic.
- small bumper hole flaps (2pcs) snap in at fall,
- the J30 lower grille I took off altogether, made a permanent black panel to shield against direct stone & salt -showers, (one inch gap for air to go around),
- the lowered reg plate assy also shields from direct stone/salt entering the radiator and A/C cooler,
- engine bay bottom shields (2pcs)
The added shields keeping engine and automatic
transmission off from direct wind.
Underside shields give cover against flying mud & snow, shield from winter while allowing air circulation. I used them through last summer, which was rather cold, but will take them off for hot weather or towing.
If it happens that we get the greenhouse summergas for few days...
Summer openings: small rubber bits [inset] between shield, and chassis longer screws, and shields open as air scoop; still dirt cannot splash into the powerhouse computer center.

Tired of your old slippery slope tires? ...Sharpen them!
The cutting edge! My GoodYear's were in good shape, well, de -signed?
I call these my 'algoretirees' ...original 13 yr old Goodyears still as good as new in whacking the winter - theyre rollin laughing at Alg Ore's glob all warmuppetshow while keeping me on the snow.

This ROUND outer edge shape did not satisfy me at least in the curves. Dunno why, but this sledge edge gives sidestepping a new meaning. Adding a groove on the leaning side, changes the whole slippery sloppery GoodYear -world to controlled traction. So addin small notch in this critical place, and now sidesweeps are history. You can sharpen your winter tire edges with a dremel -or power saw as I did (not recommended, danger).
To test what a difference vertical grooves make on snow, try dremel on your slippery outdoors boots: sharpen the 'edges' of their gripping teeth.
If it was possible to have narrower tires, I would readily install. But again, the regulations are against more safety: these wide tires float on the snow, narrow tires are only allowed for rally drivers who nee traction in the snow... Studs are a must against ice.
I had to surrender with those stone hard, ol Goodyears. These are my best winter tires so far, new, just installed 11/08. With VLSD one can just vawe bye bye to bms's:

Independent Suspension - Winter Winner:
This is the REAL winter edge in 3gen J30 chassis Maxima: independent rear suspension. I am sorry for newer max owners, from -94 forward up to -04 models, the ol' indian chased wagon axles is std setTing...
My Max has got stabilizers both front an rear (long crosswise steelrods seen on next pic; connecting both independently suspended wheel assemblys). This allows nice and steady drive.

The cutting edge! Maximized suspension...
