New Downpipe for FMII
The old style FMII downpipe after about 10 weld repairs over the several years just couldn?t be made to not have an exhaust leak for any length of time anymore. Downpipe cracks were responsible for melting numerous things in the engine compartment including the cruse control, master cylinder, a couple of coolant lines, and link map sensor case.
The original design was 2.25? pipe out of the turbo with the waste gate dumped right in at the sharp bend just out of the turbo. Down about 10? there was a slip joint where the pipe went to 2.5? originally it had a section just after the flex joint that went back to 2.25? in order to fit in a stock cat. I had previously replaced that part with 2.5?
New Downpipe.
2.5? all the way from turbo Outlet Divorced waste gate flow path No slip joint. A wedge was cut out of the 2.5? pipe at the flange in order to neck it down to the 2.25? turbo outlet. Pockets were cut out and filled in around the lower mounting stud holes in order to have enough clearance to get the nuts on and a section of tubing was extended into the pocket of the turbo to fully separate main turbine exhaust flow preventing it from being impeded by the waste gate flow. The waste gate flow goes out its own 1.5? pipe and re joins about 16? further down the main pipe.

Hey man, SWEET Miata. I saw the downpipe you made for Lances 323 GTX and was wondering what it cost to make that?? I have a 91 MX6 GT with the same turbo, and I could benefit from that same downpipe, or at least one VERY similar. Let me know! jgro1976@gmail.com. Thanks! Jason
