One reason why front mount IC are not a good option on the Z32 300zx. >>>>>
I need to make bigger air ducts for the larger intercoolers, LOL! >>>
One of the best mods for a turbocharged vehicle is an upgraded intercooler. Most applictaions requirea large single intercooler in the front.
The 300ZX though, in its complex design, was designed with two sidemount intercoolers and keep the sidemount layout is key to the VG30DETT's performance due to it crossflow design.
The crossflow design explained is that a one side turbo will feed boost into the opposite side bank of cylinders to create a well balanced, and consistant running powerplant. Most front intercoolers "MADE" for the 300ZX do not promote the crossflow design and are actually less efficient overall then side mount intercoolers.
One front mount that does promote the crossflow is the Greddy front mount. Although the greddy promotes this crossflow design, and is the best front mont IC for the 300ZX so far, It's cons still outweigh the pros. The cons being the blocked airflow to the engine bay.
The 300ZX, as you can see in the picture above, was not designed with good airflow to the radiator. As you can see that the ram air has to flow around intake and recirculatory piping and hoses, oil cooler, A/C fan shroud, A/C condensor, and then the air will make it to the radiator.
Now imagine the air having to flow through a hot intercooler beforehand. Not only will the lack of airflow make it harder to work effectively, but the ram air will also be heated more from the frontmount IC. The cooler the air to the radiator the better since the Z depends graetly on its coolant temps to run cooler since there is hardly and recircualtory air in the engine bay to cool the surface of the engine due to the very cramped engine bay.
There is a lot mor info on the subject here on WWW.TWINTURBO.NET. Search for "frontmount" and read all of the information that the bast 300ZX forum on the web has to offer.
