TheFabFord's 1967 Ford Mustang'67 Mustang open track road race car under construction. I'm building it as a cross between a Shelby Trans Am coupe and a replica of Carrol Shelby's coupe called Little Red. Carrol didn't pursue the Shelby coupe concept and it was later picked up by Ford and turned into the California Special in 1968. I originally intended to build the car as a GT 390 replica because I wanted to do something different than the 289 route and smog laws limited me to engines available to that year and model car. When the pre 1973 smog laws were lifted, I decided to go total performance instead. Later, I became a vintage road racing fan and because I had already acquired so many of the parts for the big block conversion I decided to continue the GT500 theme but bring it down to small block weight by lightening the front end where possible. I went with aluminum heads, intake, water pump and starter and a one-piece fiberglass Shelby nose and GT500 hood. The battery was relocated to the rear and Im still working on chassis mods to improve the front / rear weight bias.

The 390 GT cam was swapped out for a solid lifter grind from Cam Research with a set of Dove rocker shaft end supports and solid spacers. I have an Edelbrock Victor FE manifold that I am going to cut the runner assembly out of and machine to accept the flanges of a 351 Cleveland tunnel ram lower half. I am then going to machine adapter plates to mount two sideways Dominator carbs from TMP Carbs such that each barrel will feed an individual runner like the Weber IR systems do. Troy Patterson of TMP Carbs makes extensive modifications to the metering ciruitry using his exclusive Weber Power Plates and the installation of annular boosters. You can see in the picture that the Power Plates have removable emusion tube/main-jet/air-corrector assemblies like on Weber DCOE sidedrafts or IDA downdrafts. This allows for a much better fuel curve tuning of the system and the ablilty to run a much larger carburetor than the "out of the box" Holley's typically under most peoples hoods. TheFabFord's 1967 Ford Mustang Due to production headers lack of equal length, correct tubing diameters and decent fit I will be making my own headers with a kit from Headers By Ed. After that will be a Dr.Gas exhaust with Spin Tech mufflers with side outlets. The oil pump is blueprinted with a high pressure 427 spring and port matched to the block. I then opened up the main oil gallery from 3/8 to and installed all screw in oil galley plugs. The rotating mass was balanced and the rods shot-peened and ARP bolts installed throughout. I also completely smoothed all casting texture inside the block and heads for oil drain back and radiused all oil drain-back holes.
If finances permit, Im going to replace the Toploader with a Jericho or TKO Tremec transmission along with a Mcleod clutch and aluminum flywheel. The rear end is a Currie Enterprise 9 Plus housing with 31 spline axles and Willwood disc brakes. The 3rd member is a "Strange Engineering" aluminum unit, with a Trac Tech "Diamond Trac" posi.TheFabFord's 1967 Ford Mustang Front brakes will be from Cobra Automotive which are a replica of the T-bird big 12brakes used on the Trans Am racers from 66-72. They have two piece rotors with aluminum hats and hubs and an air vent kit that connects to flanges on the backing plates and ports on the front valance (see picture). TheFabFord's 1967 Ford Mustang The suspension is Global West throughout with rollerized spring perches, Koni shocks and a bumpsteer correction tie rod end kit. Because of the stress crack prone design of the shocktowers on these cars and the increased lateral forces from increased traction and improved suspension geometry, Im going to fabricate shock tower reinforcements to distribute the loads of the upper control arms. Lastly, Im going to build a custom roll cage and subframe connectors that flush mount into the floors.
