Got the Vic all back together this weekend. All the clean parts look great in there. I didn't get a whole lot of assembly pics because it was kind of below freezing the whole time. But I got a few, plus better pics of the destroyed piston. Cleaning up the upper and lower intake from all the carbon buildup from when the EGR was hooked up, has REALLY waken the engine up! If you drive a 5.0L, take the intake off and clean up the runners!

I rebuilt my alternator since the bearings didn't feel that good. Glad I did. WBD bearings suck, they were only 1 year old. NAPA was the only place that I could buy bearings for the alternator and not the entire alternator. They use SKF so it should last much longer. Cleaned it up and put it back together. Just waiting for a new fan blade that I ordered because I keep bending the fins on this one when it over revs.

Well while I am at my house and away from the Vic I took the intake with me and cleaned it up. I sprayed it with high temp Aluminum color paint, which at first looked a little on the bright side. Then I put a coat of high temp clear on it and it came out AMAZING! It looks exactly the same color and finish as it did the day it came from the factory! And the lower intake looks better than it ever did! Up next is the alternator.

A few weeks ago I developed a decent piston slap noise that grew very fast. So I stopped driving it, and my father and I tore it down. One of my Autolite sparkplugs, that are only 3 months old, disintegrated causing improper detonation and started melting my piston. So I am going to replace the piston, pin, and rod bearing for #5, and give the cylinder a quick honing. Other than that everything looks awesome. All the cylinders have very clear honing marks, and all my rod bearings (except #5) aren't even worn through the first layer of their coatings, not bad for 130,000 tire wasting miles! Very happy with the engine and will be great for another 150,000 miles.

Below are the pics. I only have up close pics of the caved in piston. Glad I stopped driving it as soon as I did. Much longer and it might have grenaded into the block or the head. The culprit spark plug is also in the pic. NEVER BUY AUTOLITE! The rod bearings are not that bad, but they are 10 times worse than the others were. All the rest are pics of the deformed piston dragging on the cylinder wall. Not too bad, the one pic shows how the damage had just started getting below the honing marks.

Sadly, in mid January 07, I developed a pretty bad piston slap of some sort. Tearing the engine apart this weekend to find out all that's gonna need to be replaced. But I took a video while I had the valve cover off for diagnosis. Though it would be pretty neat to see the rockers in action, not something you see everyday. Boy they're so pretty!

These are just my most recent engine bay pics. Need to go through and detail it again clean it again, but time will tell.

I blew out a timing cover gasket and it was leaking coolant really bad, so I fixed that (see below) and no sooner than I get it fixed the radiator busted. It's always been a little bit on the week side so I upgraded the radiator to an all aluminum 2 row Summit Racing universal radiator. It fit amazingly well. I didn't have to do much modification to get it in position and hooked up. But since there is no integrated tranny cooler I upgraded my auxiliary transmission cooler to a Flex-a-Lite unit. had to make a mounting bracket for one end, but the other used the stock mounting location.

So here is the timing cover gasket, timing chain and gear, and water pump replacement. Everything went smooth and was strait forward except having to pull the new water pump pulley mount to the end of the shaft to get it to line up with the Vic crank pulley again.

Well several months ago I purchased a set of ceramic coated headers. 1-5/8" Primaries, 2-1/2" collector. I cleaned up the welds and then they collected dust for 6 months lol. But I finaly put them on and did a gasket match porting job before I did. I was not expecting much if any gain in power, but it has increased my RPM range to over 5400rpm, moving my current top speed (3rd gear) from 115mph to somewhere over 125mph. I am really shocked that it made such a difference. Some pics just after I cleaned them up 6 months ago, and installed pics are below.

So I got a brand new 05 V6 Mustang radiator fan for free. So I spent a day installing it. Turned out really good.

First is my old setup. I got the new fan for free because, the shroud had a chip in it. So I had to seal that missing part up to enhance the flow. I used a piece of alluminum to cover the crack. And I used slainless steel to make the brackets, and I pollished them up to make it look good.

I also installed a new AC belt and MSD cap and rotor.

Now for the big ass update! The parts acquired, New Ford Motorsports (Crane Cams) 1.7 ratio roller rockers, New Comp Cams valve springs, used set of design two injectors (turned out to be crap so...), New set of Ford Racing 19# injectors, Some gaskets and stuff. The toys....

Now a crap load of install pics. Background; while I had my intake off I moved a temp sensor that I had in the front freeze plug to the back. In doing this I had to replace the freeze plug so while I had it off, I took a pic of the instide of the intake, though it was kinda neat. While I had my valve covers off I washed/waxed/buffed them real quick. They turned out really good, espesialy for factory VCs with 100,000miles on them. I don't have pics of the Ford Racing injectors installed on my Vic, but they are on there now. And I sent the used ones back and actually managed to get my money back, was really shocked at that...anyways. Things went on good without a hitch (besides the injectors).

I ordered some Ford Racing 9mm wires and a MSD Blaster coil. Installation was pretty easy, they wires were a little longer than the Motorcraft wires for my engine, because the Ford Racing wries are universal for all 5.0L and 5.8Ls. So I had to run them completely different. The coil had to be turned arouind because the coil wire was a little short for my aplication, but it works good now. And look good too!

I decided to replace my fuel pump because it has over 270,000 miles on it. Still wroked fine apparently, I was diagin a lag issue which actualy turned out to be a defective injector on #5 cylinder, but that subject is coming soon. So while I had the gas tank out I cleaned it up and through some paint on it. Also discovering that the fuel pump that is in my Vic and all over panther chassi cars is the same fuel pump that is in the trucks. Which means this is the same pump that fuels a 460 big block....so the pump is plenty big enough for my car and any future mods.

And here is a pic of the clearance issue with this intake. Its less than away from the butchered wiper motor mounting.

And because its there and cool and I want to make sure that there is no doubt that this motor is actually in my Crown Vic, I have a couple of engine extra pics. It doesnt look pretty but it goes. Also are some pics of the new Intake plate that replaced my original one (pictured in the center). Looks great on there now. Now I need to polish the whole intake, or at least paint it.

Nice Ride! The engine setup has given me some great ideas for my 87. Check it out! The fan is also a great idea, because in the long road I might try to custom fit a 5.0 HO Turbo in there. 5 STARS!

Wow. That's a lot of information. I just bought some Autolite spark plugs and wires for my '89 Country Squire. Should I exchange them for something else. If so, what? I think what I chose is mid-grade. I'm on a pretty tight budget.
