Centralia, Pennsylvania Meet 10/2004

rwenzing's 2003 Ford RangerOur line of trucks waits as we take in the barren Centralia landscape. An underground coal mine fire has burned here unchecked for over 40 years.

rwenzing's 2003 Ford RangerThis small cluster of homes is all that remains of the town of Centralia. Other structures were bulldozed by the government after their owners left the area. Attempts to extinguish the underground fire have been unsuccessful.

rwenzing's 2003 Ford RangerA lot of the terrain in this area looks like this. Although a 4x4 is preferable, an aggressively driven 2WD can make it, too.

rwenzing's 2003 Ford Ranger40 years of underground fires and subsided land have taken their toll on this bypassed section of PA 61. Acrid smoke pours from openings like this one throughout the Centralia area.

rwenzing's 2003 Ford RangerDespite the decent ground clearance and departure angle of the FX4 Level II, the rear bumper dragged on this short hill.

rwenzing's 2003 Ford RangerThe inimitable John Griggs: unofficial tour leader and historian of the Centralia meets.

Very well built. I would love to do all the engine work you did. Ford should have made the 5.0L a option for the ranger from the begining. Image that the Ford Ranger SVT! Now all you need are a couple of Dana 60's and your ready to hit the trails.

Nice truck, love the V8. How hard was it to swap in the V8. Can it be done with a manual transmission. Not to woried about the supercharger but I wouldn't mind swapping a V8 into mine someday.
