Centralia, Pennsylvania Meet 10/2004
Our line of trucks waits as we take in the barren Centralia landscape. An underground coal mine fire has burned here unchecked for over 40 years.
This small cluster of homes is all that remains of the town of Centralia. Other structures were bulldozed by the government after their owners left the area. Attempts to extinguish the underground fire have been unsuccessful.
A lot of the terrain in this area looks like this. Although a 4x4 is preferable, an aggressively driven 2WD can make it, too.
40 years of underground fires and subsided land have taken their toll on this bypassed section of PA 61. Acrid smoke pours from openings like this one throughout the Centralia area.
Despite the decent ground clearance and departure angle of the FX4 Level II, the rear bumper dragged on this short hill.
The inimitable John Griggs: unofficial tour leader and historian of the Centralia meets.
