GAS TANK MODIFICATION
as you saw on page one, we started with this.

they wanted 45 bucks to purge the old tank, and since we knew we were going to do a lot of work to this, we opted for a new one instead. a new one was not much more.
well, ya obviously cannot use the factory fuel pump, and we wanted factory reliability and stealth, so we had to figure out how to use the 02 fuel pump with the 84 gas tank...
and we came up with this.

we rivited the 84 fuel level sender to the outer plastic of the 02 fuel pump. this allows us the ability to use the factory fuel gauge, and also allow the 02 pcm to read the fuel level for its uses. (some say it allows for reset for hi and low octane tables, others say not. better safe than sorry)we had to modify the 02 float to read full at 8 inches just like the original vs 9 1/2 as the 2002 would have it. a definite plus of doing this is the 02 gas tank is 16.5 gallons. my 99 has registered 29 mpg with the top down goin to texas. this is roughly 470 miles per tank. the 84 delta has a
25 gallon tank! this allows a whopping ....carry the 2, times the 9, whole crap load of miles to the tank! lol (725 miles to those wondering.) will we get that? most likely no. this car is gonna be hard to keep from stomping the pedal and doing high speed runs, but if we were good boys, it would do very well between fillups.
this is the cutout we made for the new fuel pump. we had to make our own, because the 02 trans am has a plastic gas tank, which you obviously cannot weld.

this is the bottom ring. the gasket for hole size around a reference hole where the mount will actually be.

the bottom plate is 1/8 steel soldered to the tank. it has 1/4-20 nut-serts (threaded rivets) in the 6 perimeter holes for the bolts to thread into. i didnt take pics of this, but i will post some soon.
the top plate with a smaller hole on top of tank

this is the top (1/4 aluminum) plate. both factory setups use lock rings, unfortunately, they are different sizes so we had to come up with a new setup, just as durable.

this is what it looks like installed. we think it looks pretty good.

was it worth it? heck ya. with some por 15, its going to look great. just like factory.
Sledgehammer Performance...it will fit, or we will MAKE it fit.
