what is oldsmobile was still around? what would they build if they wanted to compete with the f bodys performance wise?
well, they aren't and they wouldn't, so we took it upon ourselves to create the oldsmobile that never was. and project Delta SS was born.
disclaimer:
THIS IS NOT YOUR FATHERS OLDSMOBILE
here is the beast. the body is 99% straight and has only a few spots where surface rust appears. this car was literally owned by an old lady and blew the original 307. the trans smells like it was on its way out too. you dont see many 2 door delta 88's, let alone 2 door delta 88's this clean. the interior is absolutely mint. the back seat looks never used, and the trunk never had anything in it. the cardboard at the edges above the dropoffs look brand new, no water spots, no anything. i will post pics of this later.
and in the belly of the beast... a 2002 trans am ws6 engine w/30k miles and 4l60e trans, complete with wiring, computer, a/c, power steering cooler, and factory manifolds.
this was what was in there. nice and clean, eh?

yanked!!!
now we were starting to slide her in. note the length of the boom on the hoist... it is double that length. we had to make a longer one because the engine is going way back there, and the front bumber kept us from going where we needed to. we didn't want to pull the front end off because we wanted eveything to fit without having to remove anything to service the engine.
shes in, starting to center the engine.

to jump ahead, here are pics of the new pacesetter headers. reading about how well they worked, we decided to go ahead and use them. the stock manifolds would have been MUCH easier, but its custom, right? tinkeritis and lack of common sense told us we couldn't just drop in a stock engine. we bought the uncoated ones just incase they would need some modifying to fit. they will be coated before it is all said and done. you can also see if you look closely, the engine mounts that were made to allow the engine about 1.5 inches farther back than stock on the drivers side.i will post more pics of those too. we are very happy with the way they fit.

we decided to notch the frame instead of notching the oil pan to allow full capacity of oil and just in case we needed to change the engine, we could just drop in another. this delta will never see another 307 so it didnt matter. i will post pics of all the cutting and patch panels made to allow full clearance of the oil pan and headers.
heres a quickl pic of the factory underhood fuse blocks. same location as the trans am, same brackets, its starting to come together...
new parts
new gas tank. the old one was nice, but we didnt really want to weld on a used tank, and purging the tank would cost about 1/2 the new one. were going to do a page on this mod.
the new radiator. the original one was a 2 core. this one is what came on the diesels...a factory 3 core. we should have no probs cooling this baby.(please note 4 speed ambrosia dispenser on fridge. this has proved vital to project, as well as being loaded with pepsi for the non drinker(me))
the new engine sits WAY higher than the stocker.... it definitely needs an altitude adjustment
and finally the original engine is for sale, with trans.
super cheap, includes rod knock. leave a note in my guestbook :D
