RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac FirebirdEXTERIOR NEON
************************************************************************************************************************

Well some people think neon tubes are ricey. I think when they are done well, they can add a nice accent to your car at night shows and cruise-ins.

Here it is at the Neon Contest in Pigeon Forge, TN. I only had 400 speed film and I had it in Night mode with the flash off. The shutter speed was a bit slow and w/o a tripod I got some blurring.

INSTALLATION
****************************************

For my birthday, Joe got a red underbody neon kit. We got the car up on stands and ramps and started to place the neon tubes under the car. We tried the 1 kit, but the short ones were too short for the sides, heck even the long ones were too short. But 2 short ones together were perfect on the side.

And the crazy thing was that the space b/w the Subframe connectors and gfx made the perfect slot to add the tubes.
So I got another kit. The long ones were perfect for the front and back.

I placed one long one up front, but I noticed the air dam caused a problem. It blocked light no matter where I put the tube. So I put one on either side.

Here you can see how the end on the rear tube was mounted. Sat right in the lower GFX piece.

Centers were mounted like so...

The way the rear front one sat even allowed for some light to show through the plexi on the inner side of the fog lights in the gfx.

I placed one long one in the rear. Now I mock wired the neon to see where any non-lit areas were. The only problem was the exhaust tips covered up the center section of the rear tube. The exhaust was covering up the rear bad and there needed to be some light between the wheels in the front and back.

So off to the parts store. I could not get enough tubes at AutoZone, so I went to Discount and they had street glow. They had all kind of lengths in red. I got a 20 inch to mount on the gas tank heat shield.

That would cover the blank spot caused by the tips. Now 2 15in tubes for either side or the rear end on the axle housing.

And one slim line 12 in tube for the front cross member.

Also got 3 additional 12 inch slimline tubes for along the tranny crossmember area.

There were a few more blank spots. I got some more short tubes from another kit. I placed them under the seat pan.

I had a long tube left, so I decided it would be perfect on the torque arm. We wired it up and looked at it. Now I had a nice glow!

EGG LIGHTS
****************************************

So I took out the old egg lights I had in the front gfx and set them aside for the engine bay. I rigged up 1 set of my most beat up looking egg lights to show through the plexi on the outer side of the fog lights in the gfx. Worked great. I tied them in with the neon.

Now I had 4 egg lights left over. 2 that had been in the basement with broken bulbs from a year ago and the left overs. I had 2 new bulbs and swapped out the bad bulbs. Now I had 4 good lights. I decided to mount them in the 4 corners of the engine compartment. Then I added an under hood emergency light like the kind from a 90s GM truck. It has the switch and retractable magnetic flashlight feature.

Here are some bad shots...
