Update 12-10-05 Just installed my new Cobra 18WXSTII CB radio and Firestik II no ground antenna. I have yet to tune the antenna so I am not using the CB yet...I dont want to damage it. Ive run the leads not to the fuses under the dash but to the brown lead under the dash (the one that goes to the fueses) right from the battery. I grounded it on a large metal plate which is connected to several others; which I assumed eventually made it to the chassis. I guess I am correct because the local emergency weather station comes in crystal clear. As for the antenna; I bought a no ground because of the rover's body being aluminum, and opted for a 4' because we are usually in open spaces without low trees...I plan to buy a 2' soon so I can use it in town and on trails which are more enclosed. I mounted the antenna on the tire carrier and was able to run the coax. through the same hole which is used for the rear windshield washer fluid line. I then ran the cable back through the door and though the rubber tube thing (that connects from the door to the body)....used lots of WD40. Anyway, it turned out good, and here are the pics:

Update 11-28-05 I just posted pics of my first trip with guys from the Land Rovers Only forum. We took 6 rovers; 4 DII's, 1 DI and 1 RRC up to The Bear Valley trail near Truckee, CA. Its the same area that the Donnor party went though...though for us im sure it was much easier. It is also the first snow of this year for Reno; its snowing like crazy right now...it will be tons of fun to off-road in the snow, im having a hard time waiting...but at least the snow is finally here!

Update 11-13-05 Added more pictures to Page 10- Moonrock, NV.

Update 11-12-05 Day trip to Moonrock, NV. Lots of dirt & sand trails and some volcanic rocks to climb....left the jeep to most of that. More pictures on new Page 10- Moonrock, NV.

Update 10-25-05 Good news and Bad news. First the bad news; my comp died. My motherboard is fried and needs to be shipped back under warrentee. I already recieved the RMA for it, but there is no telling how long it will take. I think forever. Then there is good news; I bought a new camera to replace the one I lost. Its a brand new Nikon D50 (outfit)- it came with one of nikons new 18-55mm nikkor lenses. I also purchased a 1GB sandisk ultraII from newegg.com, a Hoya UV multicoat filter and a pelican products 1400 military grade case from expeditionexchange.com

Update 10-25-05 Not much action with the rover due to school. I am posting this pic mostly so I can link to it from a forum, but its an idea for axle breathers that could allow them to go completly under water. Not sure if it would work, but I guess I will post and find out.

Update 10-18-05 Did a couple tests this weekend with the front swaybars removed. I was testing whether it would be worth getting disconnects and the answer is a definate YES!! Though I did it for the tests, I dont want to take the bars of permenently. I enjoy being able to corner at higher speeds and dont even bother to remind me that it isnt a porche, I know; its a rover WITH sway bars. I also like the added safety for driving and highway use, I am also looking into rear disconnects. Here are the comparison pictures, you also get to see more pics of the cut bumper.

Update 10-9-05 I am thinking about making a plate to protect the washer fluid reservoir and leads/hoses leading from it. Heres the idea;

Also here is the pic of it during the daytime;

Update 10-8-05 I finally made the time today to cut my bumper to give me more ground clearance. Though simple, it still took a couple hours of work. As you can see in the 3rd picture, instead of leaving the plastic wheel liner loose, I drilled holes to move the originally placed screws up, so now it wont flap. Below the bumper pics are two other pics for an t-shirt idea. I always see the shirts that its the front of an object on one side, then the back on another. I also made the pictures poster edges style, so it really brought out the mud.

Update 10-2-05 NEW MUDDIN' VIDEO!-PAGE 4 It rained a bit in reno and it gave us the opprotunity to get some mud action! It was tons of fun, though it sucks on the other hand because it took nearly four hours to clean, and the mud is still in places that I cant get to. It smashed the left fog light again and then ripped out the plastic stuff around it. It also smashed in the mesh on the bottom of the bumper. Though it did damage, the ARB bar will replace everything that broke, so no big deal. The only bummer part is we got shitty footage of the rover for how much time it took to clean, it was still worth it.

Update 9-24-05 We are staring an off-roading club at my high school in hopes to get some convoys going. If this works as well as I hope we will be able to have a massive black rock trip and tons of other trips to cool places. Also, to further proove that I am completely obsessed I have photoshoped a discoII to be kinda like that Subaru Outback Baja, and I also been working on drawing my rover; I really like the cartoon-look.

Update 9-20-05 The fifth, (and final) Black Rock Video is out; this one was made in utter bordom. It is a short one that has new and some used footage to the song "ride", by The Vines; the same song used in those cool Nissan Xterra commercials.

Update 9-12-05 The second, third and fourth Black Rock Videos are in; Black Rock RACE ACCROSS THE DESERT video, Playa Short Race video, and Pyramid Lake Dunes video.

Update 9-10-05 The first Black Rock video is in; its the sunrise at where we camped, the sun rose pretty early for this late in the year; 6:30am. It was freezing and windy, but worth it. Check it out in the videos page. Also, more black rock vids to come; we have tons of footage.

keptin's 2001 Land Rover Discovery

Update 9-8-05 The Rubicon videos are in; one of them is of off roading; the other is of the drive back. Also I added a rubicon page for photos not already posted on this one, and a black rock desert page for black rock photos after we get back. We are scheduled to leave tomorrow (Fri. 9-9).

Update 8-27-05 Something I forgot to mention; before I went to the rubicon I did some small cutting mods; but very important ones. I used removed the wheel-mud-things behind the front bumper and used a die-grinder to trim them up nicely so I could turn my wheel all the way in both directions without scraping on it. Then I used the die-grinder to trim (or hack) off a few inches at the end of the exhaust pipe. The previous owner had it routed out to the left so it wouldnt gas him, but after hitting it, bending the quarter panel in a bit, and bending it back ever so carfully; I decided it must go. Now it is out of the way, and if its hit it will just tuck up into the body.

Update 8-27-05 The brakes are finally put on! Yes, they took two days to get it done at Pepboys; and it wasnt cheap either. They look sweet and preform nicely, I hope that they have a "break in" period and grip even better after a couple weeks. Other good news is that they are quiet, another worry of mine; but it turns out they didnt need any anti-squeel goo. I also contacted DBA to get a 'sticker' for my rover, they said they will arrange to get one to me from Australia. As for the Black Rock trip it was canceled again! I just cant belive it; the yuppies I travel with cant make a commitment to anything! This would have been the second time it was canceled, next time I am just going to wait till they leave and THEN try to join them, but im sick of packing up the rover to have to unpack it because they cancel. The pics of Rubicon are comming shortly, I have to get the tape from my friend to get the pictures and videos out of it.

Update 8-25-05 I just came back from a two night camping trip at South Lake Tahoe and got a change to take the rover on the Rubicon!!! I have to admit, it was way out of my league. I was with a equally modified Disco I, and a more modified Jeep TJ. The first day we got lost and ended up doing the "imitation rubicon" (around where the rubicon exits; McKenny or something), but the second day we drove 2 hours to Loon Lake to start at Granite Slab. We made it 1.5 miles in 3 hours, then turned around, luckly we didnt take much body damage. I had a diff hit, and the DI got some rear fender bendage, but it wasnt that bad; other than that we were just taking it nice and easy. I should really consider getting some diff covers before I try something like it again. Pictures will be posted soon; but first I have to go to the Black Rock dessert tomorrow; for one night. Also my rover is in the shop right now getting the new rotors put on!

Update 8-20-05 Sadly the person making the black rock trip happen had to cancel; the trip has been replanned for next weekend.

Update 8-18-05 Planned for this weekend is a one night camp trip to the Black Rock Desert. Pictures and more will be posted late sunday or sometime monday.

Update 8-18-05 Good news and bad news. The good news first; the tires went in, they look great, and they preform great too, today I took it out on the trails. There was some minor trimming of the inside of the front bumper was required to allow the tires to turn, but now they fit perfect. The night before I was able to use the instructions on EE to invert the tire carrier, cut room for the rear wiper, and repaint it, using a electric hand drill as the only power tool. Also I just paid for the oil change; castrol syntec and put in the giant K&N filter. Then the bad news; my brakes are gone and I didnt know I had to also replace the rotors. They are at 10% on the fronts and 25% at the rears; and the rotors are all groved up (and I dont want to shave them.) The options; pay $1200 for the dealership to replace them with stock genuine parts (rotors and pads)/pay Midus or pep boys $250 to replace them with crap pads and shave my rotors/ pay $800 and order the brake pads and DBA Longlife Gold cross drilled and slotted preformance rotors ($120 vs $90 for stock) and put them in myself. I had to do something, so I chose option 3; but its very expensive, and I didnt plan to pay for tires AND brakes+rotors.
