AMC Hornet Sportabout X
My Hornet has no rust and only 19,000 miles on it, it is practically in mint condition! It has a stock 304(5.0 L) V8 that runs smooth. The car had a dual exhaust system installed with chrome tips and emission control components have been removed. My Hornet is very rare because it came with the "X" package, this included the unique stripes on the vehicle, a black grille, sport steering wheel and the air dam in the front. Of the 29,763 Sportabout wagons in 1976, 26,787 had a six-cylinder and 2,976 had a V8 Engine.

In June '05, I purchased a Holley 4 barrel carberator, Edelbrock intake manifold, and Edelbrock chrome valve covers for about $800.00 Cdn and installed in over a few weekends.

INSTALLATION OF PERFORMANCE PARTS(June '05)
----After 3 days of working on the Hornet, we have removed all old components that are being replaced. The new chrome valve covers did not fit because the 304 was set so far back under the hood... so we had to modify them slighty with a hammer and a grinder. Currently cleaning up the manifold gasket seals and installing carburetor onto new edelbrock intake manifold.
----After working on the Hornet for a few weekends now, we are ready to drop in the new manifold. Many problems and delays caused all the extended time we had to work on it. I expect the car to be complete and running again within the next day or two. Come back to see pictures of the finished result.
----Today, the car was finished and we got to test drive it... in the rain! The tires were spinning like crazy... 0-60 time noticeably improved(we have not yet had the chance to time it) and overall I am very impressed with the results. The engine sounded alot deeper and louder too! However, there was one problem... one of the valve covers was leaking so we had to take it off and reinstall it.
----End of June, had to install a new water pump. cost $100 Cdn.

More Pics Always Coming!

Super nice! My '76 Sportabout has only 69K, but sat outside for the 33 years. NOT in great shape body-wise. Still trying to get a carb to work on it ( single barrel ). Hopefully before the summer's out. Nice color, I like your paint job. 5 *****'s.

Nice Hornet! A friend of mine is building a Sportabout, he's going to take the 340 sticker from a 340 duster, and rearrange the numbers so it says 304! It might look pretty good!
