Pop up Headlight Deletion
Well then. I disliked my stock huge bug eyed headlights. I thought I was going to just mount headlights in the stock location or make a sleepy eye mod (ala most probes/miatas) but decided against that for now.
Hella 90mm High Beam headlights for custom applications. These are the headlights you see in the projector conversions for bug eyed wrxs, ford focus, etc.
Minus some motors, bracketry and bulbs
The front end missing a few things. It's so much easier to work like this.
The stock setup utilizes a single bulb with a dual filament. Meaning it has both high and low beam in a single sealed bulb. Big, Bulky, Ugly and not very effective at light output.
The new Hella units use separate bulbs for low/high beams. They're actually a new type of bulb called an H9.
The stock connector had 3 wires going to it. Two power (one for low beam, one for high beam) and one ground wire. All I had to do to wire these up was cut that single connector off and run the low beam power wire to the projector lense and crimp it into a new connector and run a new ground wire directly to the bumper. Same for the high beams. That was the easy part.
The brackets weren't too difficult because I received a template with the headlights themselves. I actually didn't have enough excess sheetmetal laying around after I took the front bumper off so I just cut apart the side of an old computer case (ha!).
After everything was bolted up and plugged in I reassmbled the front end and it looked like so.
High beam vs Low beam
Keep in mind the driveway slopes up a considerable amount before the garage door so the low appears lower than it really is. If everything was level it'd be at least halfway up the door.
And although this was cool, I kept getting pulled over by cops thinking I didn't have my headlights on and that I was just pimping with the fog lights on. Yikes. I tried a bit to get the lights mounted in stock locations but that was when I nailed the deer. I went ahead and let the body shop take my car back to stock lighting and then just put in some h4 conversions and high output bulbs. Not high wattage, just high output. They're just as bright, just not as cool of a cutoff as the projectors.
