1988 Porsche 944 Turbo
This is my Guards Red 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo (951). I bought it in the middle of August 2004 at what I would consider a great price. Since then I have been getting it into good mechanical condition, replacing suspect parts and cleaning it up. I had to give the paint a very good polishing to get rid of the oxidation. This seems to happen to red more than any other color.
The car came with the original 16" Porsche phone-dial wheels which I like a lot along with an extra set of ROH wheels which I recently (9/06) restored after about a week of hard work. When I bought the car it had just received a new clutch and an ANSA cat-back exhaust. Replacing the clutch is probably the worst and most costly job to do on these cars so I was happy it had been replaced. The bill was close to $2000!
The car was leaking quite a bit of oil mostly from the oil pan gasket. Since doing this gasket would require an engine hoist and a lot of time, I decided it wasn't a job I should be doing. That was a costly repair at around $750 (all labor). After that repair was made I still had some oil leaks which were traced to the front of the engine. To let the mechanic do these seals it would have cost about $450 in labor. It didn't sound too hard so me and my dad did it ourselves. I decided it was best to replace what we could while we were in there so we also did the belts, waterpump, thermostats, and some coolant and power steering hoses that were leaking as well. Now the car doesn't leak anything at all and I am very pleased, especially considering the mess that was under it when I bought it.
The interior is in good shape except for 2 slight separations in the leather on each of the seats and some small dash cracks (common). It also has an aftermarket Kenwood head unit and 10-cd changer which is nice but I really don't need it , as I prefer listening to the engine instead...
I have competed in a few autocross events now and it is very fun. I plan on doing more in the future as time allows both with the Philadelphia region SCCA and the PCA. Eventually my plan is to turn this car into a track car and do DE events at Pocono and Watkins Glen, etc.

Nice 944!. I love that color. Yeah I miss my 944 turbo like crazy and I think I am going to buy another one with low miles and sweeten it out again. I love working with cars. Keep it clean!

Thanks for calling by my pages ... looks like elbow grease paid off on the paint work as red is very hard to get back and keep back once oxidised.Just spent all week end on giving my car a full service and changing out the cam and balancer belts... this week end comming i have decided to change out the cam chain and tensioner just to give the engine extra protection... Check out my pages in a couple of weeks for full details.
