1967 Ford Fairlane 500XL

The engine block and crankshaft were sent to a machine shop through the local auto parts store. The block was acid dipped, magnafluxed to check for cracks, had the cylinders cleaned up and get new cam bearings and frost plugs installed. The cylinders ended up needing to be bored .040" over, and the journals on the crank were pretty marked up, so it had to be turned down 0.010". When I measured the crank journals they were already undersized but the bearings were all old FOMOCO bearings so the engine must have had some work done a long time ago. Everything else seemed to be original, "C3" on the crank, "C5" on the pistons, etc.
The main reason I wanted to keep the 289 is that I am quite sure now that it is the original engine.
Big pile'O greasy parts. It would have been nice to reuse more of these parts but new cylinder bores meant new pistons.
The tired old crank should be ready for another 100,000 miles once it gets some attention.
Original "C5" pistons are now just extra stuff at the shop. The tough decisions have really been figuring out what parts have to be replaced, what parts should be replaced and what parts will be fine to reuse. I wanted to keep the engine as original as possible, but I also don't want to cut any corners that will cause problems later.
