My dad and I pulled the engine and transmission out and got the engine mounted on the stand. As you can see by the fender cover, most of my tools and equipment are from Canadian Tire and Princess Auto. Canadian Tire has been a good place to get parts for the car and Mastercraft tools are pretty good quality with reasonable prices. Princess Auto has been great for inexpensive shop equipment, tools and and supplies.

I was already planning to replace the Oil pump, rings and bearings and I found out that the engine definitely needed these. I tore down the short block and was quite surprised to find that four of the pistons had broken compression rings and the crank bearings were all worn down to the copper layer. The cylinders and crank journals appeared to be in good condition, but they needed to be measured to see if they are still within specs.

The engine was pretty well stripped down to the short block before it was pulled. As you can see there was quite abit of carbon to clean out. I was also abit disapointed to find that the casting number on the timing cover starts with "C9" suggesting that the original was replaced with one from a newer engine. At least it is still a "FOMOCO" part.

Here are the original cast iron intake and 2BBL Autolite carb. From my research, it seems that most people like the Autolite carbs because of their reliablity and simple adjustments.

That's dad's baby in the shop with my Fairlane. It's a '78 L82 Corvette with a 350 small block and 4-speed.
