1983 Z-28 Camaro

stang_killa83z's 1983 Chevrolet Camaro

Here is my 1983 Z-28 Camaro. My dad bought the car back in 1984. One year before I was born, so I practically grew up with it. I remember washing this car when I was little. I had to have my dad wash the t-tops because I couldn't reach that high lol. In Aug 03 I bought an 84 Z-28, but it was totaled in Feb 04 :( So I took the 83 over. My dad always told me the 83 would be mine when I got my license, maybe it was destiny, or the 83 got jealous lol. It was bone stock when I got it but a lot of changes have been made.

The first thing I did was take the nice charcoal interior out of the 84Z and swap it into my 83. The interior in my 83 was brown and showing its age. I also swapped the wheels because I had some nice old school Enkie's with some wide 265's out back. Just putting those wide tires on made the car look mean. I swapped the doors from the 84 so the 83 would have power windows, locks, and a power trunk release. So over the past 7-8 months I slowly worked on it making some changes here and there piecing parts together from local salvage yards. I installed front and rear bumpers from a 92 Z-28 along with the ground effects and the rear highrise spoiler and decklid. I did all the body & prep work and then took the car to Maaco to get it painted back in Sep 04. It turned out pretty good for $300! I even got offered a job haha.

This car is my daily driver. I haven't gone too crazy with it because college doesn't leave me a lot of extra cash lol. I just do little things here and there. I like to take it to car shows or the local hangouts on Friday nights. Usually everyone is surprised that the car is an 83 and in such good shape. I try to set an example so other 3rd gens get the respect they deserve.

So earlier this year back in January I decided I wanted a little more power from the 305 LG4. I decided to install a Comp Cam XE262 with new Comp 981 springs and new push rods. I also replaced the head gaskets while I was doing the cam and had the heads cleaned up and hot-tanked. I should have upgraded the heads but I guess that will be a project for another day. I also replaced little things like the water pump and fuel pump while everything was disassembled. It was my first time doing something like this and I learned a lot. I was just happy my car started after I put everything back together haha. I also had a shop rebuild a mod a q-jet to my cam specs to get a little more power.

Just recently I decided to do some suspension and drive train mods. I got some SS/ZR1 wheels with 275/40/17's all the way around. They really set the car off. It's amazing how much difference a set of rims can make. Another thing I checked off my list was a 4th gen rear end. I was lucky enough to find a local rear end from an 02 WS6 with 3:42 gears and Zexel Torsen posi unit. When I installed the rear-end I also installed my Eiback Sportline springs and KYB shocks & struts that had been sitting in my closet forever. Also installed a 1LE aluminum drive shaft. The rear-end install went pretty smooth. It was my first time doing that also and it was easy.

I was wondering what all is involved in prepping the car for paint. Should I use a wax to remove dirt/grease? And then just use a DA sander with 320 grit? Thanks for you input! And sweet 83 Z28
