Just bought (yet) another BX GTi - Pix to follow... WELL HERE THEY ARE- nothing special, but I promised... They'll be at the END of the PICS...
*** Also please continue to CHECK OUT NEW PIX of my 'Old cars'...***
(Apologies for this sounding like an ad). It's just that, as this model fades into (undeserved) obscurity/rarity, I meet people who don't know what a great package it was for its time.
Here's my 1991 Citren BX GTi Auto. It has over 144,000 on it but has full history, is immaculate and everything still works and thanks to galvanised bodywork and plastics, it isn't a heap of rust unlike some cars of that age - and younger...
It has a 1.9 litre 8v developing (once!) 125 bhp. Still performs really well. (Pix to follow).
One of the best things about it is it has air conditioning - quite rare I think - especially as it still works.
Lots of features which those unfamiliar with the model might find surprising: Remote central locking, 4 electric windows, electric mirrors, electric tilt/slide sunroof, tacho, oil temp/pressure guages, CD/radio, immobiliser, dual headphone sockets, 12v power supply in rear, rear sunblinds, alloys, rear split seats with arm rest...
And then the suspension - it is simply brilliant. Why more manufacturers don't use hydropneumatics is beyond me... but Rolls Roce and Range Rover do (that should tell you something!). The seats too are some of the most comfortable I've experienced (and I've owned Mercedes' too).
So enough of the PR for an old Citroen... problems? Horrid exhaust sound - really should get a new centre pipe and back box. Needs to sound less like a French tractor on tickover... And rear headroom - rubbish if you're over 5'6" (it's because of the sunroof having to slide back into the roof I guess). And the foglights at the front are so vulnerable... expect cracks and leaks and corrosion in them at this age - I replaced mine...
I've owned two other BX GTis in my time as well as having restored - and lost to a careless French teenager - a 1974 GSX, which was the best-riding car I've ever driven bar none. I also had a particulrly rare beast - a 1985 Visa GTi with a BX GTi 1.9 engine in it. Never beautiful - except maybe from the front? - but what a car... handled better than a Pug 205 any day.
So enough rambling... some pics. I will be adding more as I can - including after I've had some slight paintwork mods done - those black sills are getting the colour-coded treatment...
