TIMING CHAIN
****************************************

The car is still not running quite right. It should not need 14 degrees of timing. Its times on the track are still too slow! When setting the timing it jumps all around and is very hard too set. Now the mark on the balancer is jumping around. Can has not had the timing chain messed with a quite some time So we think the timing chain might be shot. So we get a comp cams timing chain set. So we have to go down so far that we might as well do some further performance tweaking.

CAM
****************************************

Joe did some research to see what was available for this engine. Not much at all. Most are too mild. The ones that are aggressive enough, we worry it will not pass emissions. So Joe calls Reed Cams. They have one last blank for the 2.8. We tell them what we want and they custom grind it for me. Its more aggressive then most, but not a full race cam!
So I go with Reed cams TM276/282H12A2. This cam is 223/228 with 471/480 lift on 112 int C/L is108.

With the new cam I need new springs, so we get Comp Cams springs 980-12 to match the cam. These were the largest we could get to work with the v-6 heads spring seat. Joe had a major fight on his hands with the old spring removal. We also get a set of new Comp Cam lifters. Even the lifters gave him a fight. He had to pry the old ones out. I guess its a good thing we decided to do the cam swap. The old one is shot and worn down, hence the lifters sticking.

With this cam, the car is going to need to breathe more, so I need to finish gasket match porting the lower runners/ base intake and port the heads. I polished up the combustion chamber and cleaned up the valves. The valves are still sealing well, so we forgo a valve job.

So I touched up my earlier porting job on the plenum, runners, & continued by gasket match porting the lower runners/ base intake and heads. I polished up the combustion chamber

I painted the intake candy apple red to match the runners

We swapped out the valve covers for some Fiero ones we painted and polished.

No performance gain, but it looked a whole lot better.

INJECTORS
****************************************

Then we went with a set of 19lb injectors that I had Cruzin Performance clean and blueprint.

Its a good thing cause it turns out my new Holley fuel pressure regulator had a leak. It allowed so much pressure through that it popped the tips of my stock injectors. So another new regulator and in go the new injectors..

THERMOSTAT
****************************************

Another weird issue... The thermostat was in 4 pieces. No wonder the car ran so cool, and I had no heat.
Luckily, we had already purchased a new hyper tech 160 degree thermostat. So even it was a necessary mod.

BACK TOGETHER
TRACK RUN
****************************************

Well the car sounded awesome. The slight gurgle I used to get due to the exhaust almost being to large was now gone. Everything was coming together.

So to the track
we go. Well the numbers were very disappointing. We knew with out a chip or a computer to manage the new injectors, it would not run at 100%. But he numbers were as bad as it ran with all its old issues. So we bumped up the timing to 16 and I got another half second out of him.

****************************************
DYNO RUN
****************************************

So we were beat and ticked, but instead of giving up we went to the Dyno lab. The HP numbers were up, but the torque had come down. We then decided to tweak the timing. We bumped it to 20 and still no problems. The car was content to run there, and we got another 3-4 horses out of it. We wondered it we over cammed it?

this is the best most informative site on cardomain.com ive ever been on! i love pontiacs and i own a 94 Grand Prix you should come check out sometime. I definately think that u should make ur own site for this generation of Firebirds! Great job on the car, and the hood looks good, ive seen a couple Grand Prix's in the 92-96 gen. that molded the RAM II scoops to the hood and made it look nice, i think someday im going to do the same! PS i had to add u to my friends so i can come back to the site all week at work just to read it all!
