RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac FirebirdGASKET MATCH LOWER RUNNERS (INTAKE BASE) PORTING
************************************************************************************************************************

Well with the heads going further then a gasket match port, I had to do something more to the lower intake then its simple original gasket match port, or it would be a wasted effort... I decided to stick with my original lower intake that I had already done a gasket match port job on! To take it further... First off, I had to have the intake ports in the heads match up to the runner ports in the intake. Then I needed to open the whole track up further to make room for all that airflow from the new truleo intake! Amazingly, I found quite a few areas I could really clean up the intake runner. I just hope it does the trick! This is another area of little research, like the heads, so I'm flying by the seat of my pants on this one too!

Stock lower intake runner...

The casting roughness is quite apparent in most of the stock pics, as well as what it does to trap carbon. Here are some pics of a stock lower intake I had around that is fresh off a car and unported! Being aluminum there was no real easy way to clean it up! So I sprayed it down with intake cleaner and this was as good as it got!

Going to follow the airpath thru on these pics...

Early Gasket match porting on lower intake runner...
**************************************************

The idea behind porting the intake is the same as the heads, having the track cleaner and larger then stock; removing all casting lines and rough, sharp edges for smoother air travel thru the runner. Just removing the casting will open things up pretty well. Then you have to be sure and gasket match the porta on both ends. The step b/w the intake and heads should be a smooth as possible with no lip, that way you reduce turbulance in the airflow. Now like the intake side of the heads, you don't want a mirror smooth finish when you are done...port this intake runner track leaving it rough to keep the fuel suspended and mixing with the air.

It can take awhile to port an intake even though it is aluminum. Mostly, because I could not take short cuts like the carbide cutter, it was too extreme for aluminum and there was a good chance I would go too far if I used it! So I had to instead stick to the grinding stones. Now the grinding stones fill up with aluminum and clog easily. To combat this, I stuck with the trick of wetting the stone with WD-40 before I started and as I went. Worked like a charm!

Here it is being installed after I freshly gasket match ported it!

this is the best most informative site on cardomain.com ive ever been on! i love pontiacs and i own a 94 Grand Prix you should come check out sometime. I definately think that u should make ur own site for this generation of Firebirds! Great job on the car, and the hood looks good, ive seen a couple Grand Prix's in the 92-96 gen. that molded the RAM II scoops to the hood and made it look nice, i think someday im going to do the same! PS i had to add u to my friends so i can come back to the site all week at work just to read it all!
