RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac FirebirdNEW HEADS: PERFORMANCE ADDITIONS
************************************************************************************************************************

Well as you know from previous pages, I ported my heads well over the standard gasket match port job! To go along with this, the original plan was to take my iron heads and get them reworked. We were never really sure of the valve job that was done when my old heads were installed and beyond that the car had been running on them for about 60,000 miles. They were well overdue for another valve job anyway! Thank god for this idea, or we never would have known my old heads were cracked. So now instead it was to the machine shop with the new ported heads for a multiangle valve job. Then to further freshen things up, the heads were milled the standard amount to help with the compression and sealing.

So to compliment the increased port work and the new valve job, I went with 1.6 roller tip rockers. Figure I could milk the cam a bit more! Speaking of the cam... the swap was done quite some time ago, and the car has been run pretty hard. The springs originally installed were the largest springs we could fit in my limited spring seat on these heads. Well we were never sure these springs had even been adequate for the cam to begin with. So with a bit of age anyway, we decided it was time to upgrade them too. The machinist enlarged the spring seat and added a retainer so I could run some seriously beefy springs.

Back from the machine shop...

Now they are all set with new valves and a multiangle valve job and a bit of milling... new beefier springs and seats... all new locks and retainers... Yeah!

Suckers look wild don't they!

New Comp Cam 986-16 Valve springs!
**************************************************

So the springs that were on the old heads were as strong as we could get with the correct diameter to fit on the v-6 heads! Well this time we decided to get some stronger springs in a larger diameter and see what Kyle could do!

So here are the Comp cam 980 valve springs compared to the new seriously beefy 986 dual coil springs! Now remember, the smaller springs were my replacement springs when I went to the new cam. They were the strongest we could find in the right diameter! So imagine how much smaller the stock springs are lol!!!

Now here are the heads back from Kyle with the new valve spring seats he made. Yep he got those beasts to work. Added all new locks and retainers!

Used new ARP head studs! Love them!

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

To install them, you use a allen head bit or wrench...

Here you can see the allen hole recess in the top of the stud!

this is the best most informative site on cardomain.com ive ever been on! i love pontiacs and i own a 94 Grand Prix you should come check out sometime. I definately think that u should make ur own site for this generation of Firebirds! Great job on the car, and the hood looks good, ive seen a couple Grand Prix's in the 92-96 gen. that molded the RAM II scoops to the hood and made it look nice, i think someday im going to do the same! PS i had to add u to my friends so i can come back to the site all week at work just to read it all!
