RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird2005 TRULEO INTAKE & FORD TB VACUUM LINE ROUTING
************************************************************************************************************************

Well with the new intake mainifold came changing the original vacuum line routing. I wanted something cleaner & more simple till we could either eliminate or completely relocate the lines thru the firewall.

So first I had to assess what I had available on this new set up!

Rerouting the vacuum lines

You can also see in the pic that the drivers side barb is larger then the passenger side...

Since the factory set me up with a ton of emission vacuum lines, my first change was to get larger barbs for the intake's vacuum lines. Also, the now the straight design concerned me, as the distributor is right at the back of the intake and I did not want all the lines taggled up in the spark plug wires, nor did I want any to have to turn sharp and be pinched. SO i wanted to face in a less obtrusive angle. So while I hunted for larger barbs I found ones that turned a right angle!

Driver's side barb...
**************************************************

I decided on sticking close to what the factory intended when I reran the lines, but I wanted there to be less line running and wrapping all around. Normally, the brake booster, the lines for the interior dash air vents, and vacuum resurvior AKA "Orb of Power" run off the back of the stock intake from a T line. So in keeping with that idea, I ran them to the larger of the 2 rear intake barbs. The easiest way to do this was to use a vacuum t-fitting coming off the barb. The largest line that required the largest amount of air was the brake booster line, so I ran it to the larger port on the t-fitting.

This is how it will attach...

Now I connect the lines for the "Orb of power" & Dash vents

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

I only ran the one line since that was how the factory did it.

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

They had a spliter with a one way in line valve that splits the line into 2. The line leading behind the valve cover is the dash vent line, the other goes to the orb!

All attached!

Passenger's side barb...
**************************************************

Now most of these lines came from the stock vacuum tree. The stock vacuum tree got its air supply from a very large port on the stock TB. The stock vacuum tree supplies the PCV, the lower intake port, and a charcoal canister line. Well the port the Ford TB offer was not big enough, plus it would have made for a serious over abundance of lines dispursing this way and that way. So the plan was to use the passenger side barb to supply the vacuum tree intead. So I started by altering the stock vacuum tree.

Here was my current vacuum line tree. It is actually a camaro version, due to the dealer not listing a Firebird version still in production the the time of my engine fire those years ago!

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

This is the actual firebird version that was not available. This one came from the junkyard. It was to be my donar for cut up!

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

Here is the where the PCV connects, I just left this line stock.

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

Here is the connection point on the lower intake. I left this connection alone on the stock vacuum tree as well.

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

First cut... this line was would not be fed directly via a t-fitting off the passenger side barb instead of wrapping all the way around the intake and back out.

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

Second cut... this line normally fed off the stock TB, but now it would go directly to the passenger side barb, via the t-fitting, significantly shortening its route.

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

So I started by trying to find a vaccuum line that would fit over the now cut down feed line for the tree.

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

When I had no luck with this I instead shaved a vacuum line to fit in it snug and attached a vacuum t-fitting to it.
RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac FirebirdRedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird
Here it is in place.

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

Now I attached the tree to the car. PCV was attached as stock, as was the lower intake line...

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

Then I attached and feed line to the t-fitting off the passenger side barb.

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

Now I had to run the line that went to the carcoal canister... I took a section of the old hard vaccum line and ran it from the t-fitting to the stock tie in by the valve cover.

**************************************************
Throttle body vacuum lines...
**************************************************

The factory also ran quite a few smaller vacuum lines off the TB as well. They were to the fuel pressure regulator and to the charcoal canister/EGR system. I have removed the EGR, so that helped make some of the routing easier...

There was only one medium sized fee line on the ford TB, so I used it to feed these smaller lines.

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

The only problem was how it faced... straight down!

Fortunately, the line could be rotated, so I swept it back. This would keep the lines from getting kinked.

Now I had to have the vacuum port on the Ajustable Fuel pressure regulator moved to a better angle and then it was a piece of cake.

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

...
So I got a vacuum line to run off the TB line and put a y-fitting in there to split the line between the 2 components.

Now the hard line that ran to the charcoal canister I made up of some left over bends I had from various vacuum line junkyard finds.

this is the best most informative site on cardomain.com ive ever been on! i love pontiacs and i own a 94 Grand Prix you should come check out sometime. I definately think that u should make ur own site for this generation of Firebirds! Great job on the car, and the hood looks good, ive seen a couple Grand Prix's in the 92-96 gen. that molded the RAM II scoops to the hood and made it look nice, i think someday im going to do the same! PS i had to add u to my friends so i can come back to the site all week at work just to read it all!
