RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac FirebirdTRULEO INTAKE AND 65MM FORD THROTTLE BODY INSTALLATION
************************************************************************************************************************

Now that we test fit the intake and new it would physically fit it was time to start altering the cars stock configuration to work with this new custom intake!

************************************************************************************************************************
INSTALLATION OF THE FUEL RAIL
******************************************************************************************************************************

We found that the fuel rail had to go on before the intake was installed on the car. The angle of the neck made it inpossible to slip it in once the intake was on the car. In the rear the distributor was in the way. So we took off some of the injectors, slipped the fuel rail in place. Then reinstalled the injectors. We also found the Fuel pressure regulator vacuum line had to be turned to other than the stock location. Impossible with the stocker, but thank goodness we have an aftermarket Holley FPR!

Well for both looks and fitment we decided to get rid of the old intake fuel lines and go with new braided fuel lines. So here you can see the new blue AN fittings. (plan on stripping the anodizing off to polish them instead.)

New fuel lines

Removed the old...there was an odd selection of sizes available, so we decided to not only replace the section of hard line on the intake, but the rubber line between that and the hard line on the car's chassis.

So a 3 foot section was needed to complete the task!

Now for easier install we tried a few ideas, but settled on Studs for the intake manifold mounting

Another test fit to see how things were lining up....

FORD THROTTLE BODY INSTALLATION
************************************************************************************************************************

Originally, I had ordered an aftermarket throttle body made specifically for the 2.8/3.1/3.4 engines out of finland. Well I had placed my order, all I was waiting on was for them to come back from vacation so I could send my $. Never heard back from them again! After countless unanswered emails, we gave up and started looking to do a swap instead. So after much debate we decided to go with a 65MM Accufab Polished Ford Throttle body.

Installation
****************************************************

The first step was to install studs to the Truleo TB mounting plate for a easier install of the throttle body

Now we had to decide how we wanted to orient the TB on the intake. It could go any number of ways, but to match with the stock GM configuration, I would need the TB linkage to be on the driver's side. The stock throttle linkage was designed to pull the linkage to open the throttle blade. Well upon inspection of the TB, if we put the linkage on the driver's side, the linkage would have to be pushed forward to open the throttle blade. Well this was obviously backwards from stock. We had to have the linkage oriented so the throttle cable would pull the linkage. So instead, we had to flip the TB over and have the linkage on the passenger side. So now it was time to see what we had to modify to make it work. Well the TV cable had plenty of reach, since it actually exists the tranny on the passenger side and snaked over to the drivers side. Though the stock Throttle cable was no where near long enough to make the trip over to the passengerside. So we purchased a Lokar aftermarket resizable Throttle cable.

Here the TB finally mounted to the intake manifold...

Throttle Body Sensors
****************************************************

Throttle Position Sensor

We used the Ford Throttle Position Sensor that I got out out of a the donor Ford TB I got from a junkyard car. Well of course this left me with the dredded weather pack miss match...

Now I had originally snagged the donor TB to send to Truleo for a template for the TB mounting surface. Fortunately we thought enough ahead and grabbed the sensors and cut the wires to include both sides of the weatherpack. So I got out my trusty wiring kit and made the swap over to the ford connector. TaDa...

Idle Air Control

Now for the idle Air control we got an aluminum adapter made specifically so we could use the GM version.

As luck would have it, when the throttle linkage issue came up and the throttle body had to be repositioned, it put the IAC on the bottom of the TB. Too bad you could not see the pretty aluminum case, but it was SOOO much cleaner this way!

Here it is installed in the car...
Talk about a perfect fit...
You can see how the IAC is just clearing the car's Thermostat housing.

You can see how it lines up just perfect with the Suncoast Air box. Test fit showed the Mass air has just the perfect amount of space to fit b/w the Airbox and TB!

this is the best most informative site on cardomain.com ive ever been on! i love pontiacs and i own a 94 Grand Prix you should come check out sometime. I definately think that u should make ur own site for this generation of Firebirds! Great job on the car, and the hood looks good, ive seen a couple Grand Prix's in the 92-96 gen. that molded the RAM II scoops to the hood and made it look nice, i think someday im going to do the same! PS i had to add u to my friends so i can come back to the site all week at work just to read it all!
