1995 CAMARO 3.4L V-6
****************************************

Joe & I finally decided we are tired of trying to fix the darn 2.8... Mod after mod never produced the power it should have.

Now I got a new job as a service writer at a Chevy dealership. I worked for the very dealership that rebuilt my bottom end. It was during my employment I learned the truth about the first bottom end rebuild. A mechanic named Luke, who used to work there when the repair was done to my car, came by to visit some buddies who still worked there. He and I got to talking. He told me what he remembered about the rebuild that Glenn did on my 2.8. None of the mechanics thought the engine was rebuildable, but Glenn insisted. Instead of being honest, the mechanic decided he could make more $ on a rebuild than a swap. So I was told there was no wy to get a 2.8 block...I even asked for a bigger v-6 that would work! Turns out they could have put in a 3.4 from the get go! Dealers! When Glenn rebuilt it they all told him it would be back! The motor was a time bomb and totally out of balance. They were amazed it even ran! So exactly a year later, after Glenn was mysteriously no longer employed, the engine did go. Brent then rebuilt it the 2nd time. He got it in better shape and the repair lasted. He told me it never should have been rebuilt the first time, but his hands were now tied. All he was allowed to do was fix it, even though he felt a whole new block should have been dropped in.

So long story short, once I had all the information, I then knew why the engine shook like it did and never seemed to be able to make any decent power. Anyway, the hunt was on for a low mile 3.4L block.

Further information showed us the heads are the same on all of the RWD 2.8, 3.1, and 3.4 Firebirds & Camaros. Believe it or not the same heads came on the Fiero! The S10/Blazer has different heads though!

One difference I did not expect... the pistons are recessed on the 3.4...

they were flat on the 2.8!

Finally I find one with only 50,000 MILES $600.00 later I have it at home. Some finagling and I get a good friend to let me use her shop to install the motor over a weekend.

Well it took longer then a weekend since the block and tranny were getting a good candy apple red paint job. After some issues getting the timing straight, the beast was alive and what a difference!

UNDERDRIVE PULLEY
****************************************

When we did the motor swap it was the perfect time to add the new ASP underdrive pulley!
Here is the stock one...

Well all was well, and the car seemed ok with this pulley at first. I listened to what everyone said and did not get the ASP alternator pulley.

Well as time went on I noticed the atlernator was not keeping up. The alternator was completely rebuild by a shop, not some parts store reman unit! With the new alternator, I got a new March pully, but still in the stock size...
RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird
Even still, it kept dropping to 10-11 volts. This was not right. So I figured it was the pulley size causing the problems.

So I then ordered the March's smaller diameter pulley. Here you can see the new March pully is much smaller in diameter...

This did the trick. Now the alternator kept the car at 14 volts stong!

this is the best most informative site on cardomain.com ive ever been on! i love pontiacs and i own a 94 Grand Prix you should come check out sometime. I definately think that u should make ur own site for this generation of Firebirds! Great job on the car, and the hood looks good, ive seen a couple Grand Prix's in the 92-96 gen. that molded the RAM II scoops to the hood and made it look nice, i think someday im going to do the same! PS i had to add u to my friends so i can come back to the site all week at work just to read it all!
