RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird2006: AMPLIFIER MOUNTING
************************************************************************************************************************

Now I decided to try go for a funtional way of storing my amps, versus a showy way...for now!

************************************************************************************************************************
AMP INSTALL: VERSION II
************************************************************************************************************************

Well we decided to do some mods to the engine bay. The goal was to clean up the wiring. Well part of that clean up was rerouting the battery to the back of the car.

So out came the spare tire and in came the battery.

Well that opened up quite a bit of free space. In fact, there was just enough to be able to relocate both amps to the spare tire compartment right over the battery.

It sure shortened the power cables. That in itself can really help keep the amps at their best.

Building the rack
***************************************

This was still only going to be a temporary rack till I get brave and build one in the back of the rear seats!

But I started with a piece of cardboard and got a rough measurement for the area. I cut the plywood to match. I got lucky and it was right on! So to deal with the odd shape in the compartment and to maximize my space, I fit in the board and marked where it was contacting the body to trim it to sit further down in! The snugger the better as this is what the Amps would be attached too!

So I had to clearance for the body seam at the further most forward point!

Then in the center the spare tire framework jutted out!

This rounded courner was the hardest to get just right. TO help support the board I added a "L" bracket to hold its edge!

Here it is all seated in the car...

Just to be sure the amps will fit height wise with no issues...

Out of the car before carpet...

Added the carpet for a cleaner look!

Also it would serve as a sound damper at the points the board contacted the body, reducing the sub vibration...

Test fitting in the car with the carpet. I bit of trimming was needed as the carpet added enough to make the board not sit as well as it did bare!

You can see how close it sits to the top of the battery box! Talk about maximizing the space!

The new amp
***************************************

Its a Lanzar Amp. Will get the specs to add later! I got it to strictly power the subs. I got tires of over working the poor Us Accoustics. I wanted to buy another one of them, but Crutchfield does nto sell them anymore. Thing was a darn good amp! Now I've got to do something about the blue, LOL! Just not sure what just yet!

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

It was a tight fit. in fact, it would not fit with outnthe amp angled up in the rear. So I got some of my OLD Valve springs and shot them a matching silver. Then I placed them under the rear mounting point and it came out great!

No melting in the heat with my coating, but gas will make it melt as will other car chemicals! I would say heat softens the stuff, but all mine is out of direct sunlight and is undercarpet padding, or under paneling... so it causes no problems! In the dead of summer sitting on hot asphalt I have never noticed the underside coating melting, though I sealed it by painting it.

Nice Ride! I've read a comment about the undercoating melting and stinking in the summer heat... did you ever get that problem?
