RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac FirebirdMISC TRIM PIECES
************************************************************************************************************************

I made this page to throw in all the pieces that did not seem to have a specific category to go into.

****************************************
STEERING WHEEL
****************************************

The steering wheel is stock I just covered it with a Wheel Skins leather cover.

I also painted the Firebird red with thick rub on accent paint.

That is one of my favorite touches.

VENTS
****************************************

You can also see that the vent borders on the dash are painted red.

I did this with touch up paint from the bottle. I used PlastiKote’s touch up paint. It is a lot more forgiving and can be sealed up and used again, unlike Duplicolor’s touch up paint (dries out). I have found the PlastiKote will last for years if you put the cap back on tight. It also does not flash dry on a surface quite as quick. This property made it perfect for painting the vents. I got a larger brush with smoother bristles. I went around the edge multiple times with thick even coats. If you do it quick enough the starting point will not dry before you get back to it. Then you will have an even jointed point.

Now I also painted the defroster vents in the dash pad.

They were painted with Duplicolor’s spray can paint. I prefer Duplicolor's spray paints over PlastiKote’s. If you let the layers of paint dry for too long with PlastiKote, you have to sand b/w coats. With Duplicolor there is no sanding required b/w coats. I would still follow the directions on the back down to the letter though. The paints have gotten a lot more finicky in the past year.

Also the radio pod vents have gotten a coat of red.

SHIFT INDICATOR PLATE
****************************************

Now I’m sure you have noticed the shifter console is a bit different from a base model 1987.

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

I upgraded to the shifter console from a 1991 firebird. I upgraded because I hated that there was no indicator to tell you what gear you were in. The 1991 had an indicator that shows what gear you are in. I used its factory window switch locations for my VPA window switches. I picked it up at a local junkyard for next to nothing.

I switched in a new black shift boot that mom made for me, in place of the old grey one that was ripped up.

ASH TRAY
****************************************

RedraifExtras's 1987 Pontiac Firebird

I had to repaint it due to the previous owner being a smoker. One who could not aim at that. There were actually cigarette burns on the center console where she obviously missed the ash tray...So I figured why not add some contrast. I also repainted the backside of the door red to cover up some other burn marks she left behind. Another Chore! I had to disassemble the ashtray lid. No easy task mind you! Odd springs & levers that all have to line up just right. Then you have to pull back this clip and hold its tension while you slide it on...I had to have shot that thing across the room a dozen times...

SPEAKER GRILL COVERS
****************************************

It Started with Ryan trimming out my dash speaker grill covers.

Once I saw them, I liked the idea and soon coverd all my exposed speaker grills with the same red grill cloth.

DRAGON SUNGLASS HOLDERS
****************************************

Ok I know this is a silly thing to mention, but the car has to have some function. I do wear sunglasses a lot and needed someplace safe to keep them. These beauties I got in Hawaii work wonders and go with the car too! They are red metallic sunglass holders attached to the knee level panels on either side of the steering wheel.

The holders have a black dragon design on them.

REARVIEW MIRROR
****************************************

I wanted the ability to have more directional light in the car when I needed it at night. So when I found this GM rear view mirror I decided it would be perfect. This has the 2 maplights on either side for the driver & passenger and is so much less distracting then turning on the overhead light every time.

Here are the lights on with the door open,

or they can be selected individually by a button on the front

PETALS
****************************************

I just got a new chrome set with Dragons on them...Wait...before you freak...I toned down the Chrome with some rub on paint. In person they are pewter looking w/ a Chrome Dragon.

And the plastic floor mat is only there to protect the new floor mats

Yes I painted where is says fuses in red, so shoot me... Moving on!

****************************************
MAP POCKET
****************************************

I replaced the stock gray dash map pocket with a black one from the junkyard.

The install is pretty easy. In these pics you can see the push pins that are used to hold them the the dash panel.

Here is a shot of the dash w/o the pocket so you can see the holes in the dash these pins line up with.

The gray scribble you see is Scott Settlemeir’s signature.

We have seen him at the F-body Gathering in Atlanta in 2002 & 2003 & 2004. And at the Trans Am Nationals in 2004.
