Only 290 Mercury Capris were converted during 3 years of production (in '85 there were 90 Midnight Blue and 60 Oxford White, all with Popsicle Orange stripes). This was the Mustang's sister car, built on the same line at Dearborn. Besides the obvious aerodynamic and appearance modifications there were engine, suspension and brake modifications as well. These were the first Ford cars to be factory modified since the Shelby Mustangs in the '60's. Also notice that ASC added flush rear quarter windows, Ford made that change years later on the Mustang.

speedracer815's 1985 Mercury CapriThe interior was treated to ASC/McLaren steering wheel, Kenwood stereo (no longer in my car) and even offered an optional radar detector (not in my car). Seats were specially supplied with grey trim, replacing the standard Mustang/Capri red trim which would have clashed with the Popsicle orange stripes. speedracer815's 1985 Mercury Capri
speedracer815's 1985 Mercury CapriFord factory engine modifications included Ford Motorsport B-303 cam and "Prototype" high rpm valve train. Although the stock heads and manifold remained, ASC/McLaren expected owners to make their own modifications. Suspension modifications included Carrerra adjustable struts and shocks, and Ford Motorsport 5800C springs, T'bird TurboCoupe tierod ends and harder bushings. The brakes got a modified proportioning valve and uprated pads.
When I got the car it already had an 8.8" rear axle. I added a polished Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold and carb; polished underdrive pulleys; Ford Racing plug wires and coil; converted to 130A 3G alternator; and an electric fan in addition to removing the A/C, smog pump and all the now unnecessary wires and vacuum lines.
speedracer815's 1985 Mercury CapriThe "bubble hatch" was the result of Ford and Roush Racing doing wind tunnel testing on Mustangs. The bubble hatch reduced rear end lift at high speed and was to go on a special edition Mustang. At the last minute, Roush decided the Capri had better front aerodynamics then the current Mustang. In '84 the bubble hatch went on production Capris to homologate them for SCCA Trans-Am races.Capris won 11 of 16 races in '84 and 12 of 15 in '85!

That's a sweet ASC. Those are pretty rare. If I could get my Capri to look that nice I'd be damn happy!
