Midrange Installation

My DLS 3" domes are going to go in kickpanels, pointed directly at each other. They are sealed back, so volume is not a problem.

There's only one problem with this in a M3 - the driver's kick houses the deadpedal, hood release lever, and the trunk release button - ouch. The passenger side is just a flat area.

Taking a look with them removed, there's not much to gain by cutting out the carpet - maybe 1/2":

Well, a little dremel action and the driver's side looks like this:

The curve matches the passenger side perfectly.

Now I have a nice flat area - a bit small though. It's too bad that the carpet is not flat from the factory where the dead pedal was - it has a bulge that won't lay flat - but it has enough give to it.

I grabbed some MDF and cut out a few flat parts to fit nicely. Then with some sparcers and a few rings, you have this:

Add some fleece and resin, and you get this:

I trimmed them up a bit, and here's what they look like in the car:

To attach the kicks to the car, I had to install some brackets first. Some 1/2" MDF and a few screws later and you get these:

And here they are installed:

Now all I have to do is throw in the mids.

Wow, that is awesome. I'll definitely use this as a guide if I decide to go with the M3 over the 540. I like how the battery is in the trunk. Lookin forward to see the final touches.

The sub box was secured by some brackets from the top of the box to the rail that frames in the fold down rear seat opening. The amp rack was secured using the frame rails that run along the trunk, and the rack was attached to the box with some brackets.
