Okay here's the story behind this car. After four years of having my parents or older brother (pyrelight_13)take me to high school, my dad surprises me the day before my graduation with a 1970 302 Mustang. He says the car was in pretty good condition considering he got it for $200 with the engine, a Holley carburator and everything in there. So he takes me to see it and the body was in pretty good shape, but the paint job was horrible, the wheels were rusted out, and the driver seat was pretty ripped up. As for the body, it looked as if the previous owner wanted to put bigger tires in the back and tried to cut into the rear fenders...with a handsaw! One side was really jagged looking and the other had a hole that was rusting pretty bad. But I couldn't complain; I now had a car. A classic car for $200! We replaced the basics: spark plugs, all the seals, gaskets, and then we put some gas in it. It hadn't been started for over 10 years (my dad got it from some guy who had it sitting in his garage). So I started it and it ran kinda rough. I didn't want to drive it yet because the tires were really worn out; "maypops" were what my dad's friend called them. All the lights worked and everything, so I cut the car off. Then came the next day.
At 9 a.m. the next day, graduation practice began. I found my classmates and said enthusiastically, "Guess what I got for graduation?" and when they said "what?" I flashed the keys in their face. They were all excited because I was pretty much the only girl on campus who could talk about classic cars. Guys on campus would ask me about cars all the time so they were all happy for me that I had a classic car of my own. Days later we flushed the radiatior, got a new filter, and a chrome filter cover. After we did that, the car's engine was definitely running more smooth. And since it wasn't really safe to drive on the roads yet we towed it to a mechanic shop (my dad owns his own wrecker service so mechanics at this shop down the road gave him copies of the keys to their gated area). The mechanics all took turns fixing up the 'stang, especially this one guy in particular who owns like 3 old mustangs, and when they fixed something, another part would need replacing. Well the guy with the mustangs said that something was wrong with my carburator, so he gave me one of his extra Holleys that was laying around. Next they bought a kit for the brakes. I have drum brakes all the way around; no disc brakes, no power braking and no power steering. That's always a good thing for a new driver not to have, right? Well after a couple of weeks my dad towed the stang to an empty KMART parking lot and I got to test drive him. It took a couple of tries though. Once I shifted the car into drive it would die out. After a couple of minutes it was making it rounds in the parking lot. The steering wheel was really fighting me. Since my brother was with me I said, "hey check this out" and when I let go of the steering wheel, the car pulled to the right hardcore. We both had a good laugh because the alignment was pretty horrible for the car to do that. I hit a speed bump and my dad told me to pull over. One of the wheels was wobbling. Oh well. Something else to fix. The approximate time of completion was supposed to be August, but they haven't even began the body work, or replaced the tires. So I asked again and they said body work, paint job (hot pink w/boss 302 stripe kit), and running it should be ready by October. From there I'll add more body enhancing items, such as a shaker hood, rear spoiler, and chin spoiler, and wheels. I've been to the drag strip a couple of times and we have a whole bunch of Mustangs here in San Antonio, so I want to be the unique hot pink Boss 302 wannabe ^_^. I'll try to upload my pics soon.
