CRASH
August 15th, 2003

So far ive had a couple of fender benders, nothing serious but this one by far is the worst. Last year around 1 am, i had just closed up the bar at the hotel and before going out club hoppin, my friend and i decided to go for a joy ride. Let me just add that i never ever drink and drive and when i work at my bar i never drink cuz im such a light weight. Anyways as we were driving here on the island i was taking this bend at about 60-70 khm, speed limit is 55khm on that road. In the middle of the bend, this guy on a scooter came into my lane and hit me straight on. His scooter upon impact flew onto my bonnet, he hit the front window towards the passenger side and slid over the roof, hit my rear wing and fell onto the ground. We were both wearing our seat belts. He didnt even have a helmet on. At the end of the day, he broke his right leg in 6 different places and his pelvis area. Police report says he was 3 times over the drinking limit and that it was his fault. Heres the bad news though... Here in Greece , Greek insurance law say that if you are driving while under the influence of alcohol, the insurance will not cover you at all! The damage to my car was about 9,000 euros which i think is about 10,000 dollars. Damage was: Front-bumber, grill, head lights, left fender, hood, window. Engine-radiator smashed onto pulleys so we took apart the entire engine to check for damage. Roof, trunk, and rear wing repainted. And since his insurance wont pay for this he has decided to say that i was at fault and now we are going to court. The good news is that my friend had a video camera and was taping our whole journey, and in the tape it shows exactly what happened and it shows that he was in my lane!
Since my insurance is fully comp, it has paid for all the damage. It took from august to january to get my car fixed cuz alot of the parts - i.e. front veilside bumper, carbon bonnet were shipped from the the states. We also rebuilt the engine with forged parts, so that also took some time waiting for the parts to arrive.
Now the car is fine, engine runs beautifully and it looks like nothing ever happened. However, i still havent gone to court and i have no idea when that will be cuz unfortunatly the court system here in Greece is backed up. Oh well, I guess ill just have to wait...
