This is my '88 Dodge Daytona Pacifica. It has been upgraded quite a bit since I bought it in October 2003. The story starts out with me owning an '86 Laser XT. A co-worker knew a guy with 300 cars in his yard who had been ordered to clear them all out and had this one for sale. He told me it was in awesome condition, inside and out. Just didn't know if it ran or not, but looked to have a freshly rebuilt head on it. So I bought it. He was right, the paint was really glossy, the interior was almost flawless. And I had the engine fired up about 30 minutes after I got the car home, before I even unloaded it from the trailer. I made it about 10 miles down the road before a freezeplug popped out of the back of the block and left me in a HUGE cloud of white steam. So at that point I sold my Laser and bought a 2.5L engine from a minivan in the junkyard. They insisted the engine was bad, so that made the price quite nice. They even pulled the engine for me and loaded it into the back of my Laser (guess I bought the engine, then sold the laser). Anyways, I swapped on the freshly rebuilt head that was on my Daytona's engine. Along with a Mopar Performance 006 head gasket. I also noticed the minivan's turbo had tons of slop, and my Daytona one didn't have much. So that got swapped onto this new engine. Got it all together, said a prayer, and it's run great ever since. I think I put 15k miles on this BAD junkyard engine.. haha. I did have the head that came with that engine checked out, it needed a valve job, they weren't sealing. So it probably was a bad engine when it had that head. I had to track down a 2.5L computer to go with this engine. Luckily the car is an '88 so my computer options are very flexible. Shortly after buying the car I got very fed up with the seatbelts being attached to the doors. I got tired of getting strangled if I opened the door too fast. So I picked up seatbelts from an '84 Daytona in the junkyard and retrofitted them. All the boltholes were still there, I just had to bolt them on, and cut a moonshaped hole in the rear quarterpanel plastic to let the belts come out. I only did this to the driver's side. I don't care much about the passenger. haha. The car was an automatic when I got it. I hate automatics with a passion. I called around and sourced an A523 for dirt cheap, already pulled and sitting on a shelf at a local junkyard. While I had that out I swapped in a Garrett turbocharger from an '85 Shelby Charger in place of the undersized Mitsu turbo that Dodge had limitted these engines with. I upgraded the 2.25" downpipe to 2.5" and had 2.5" run all the way back, no cat, and just a fart cannon for muffling. It sounds excellent. I like the A523 because reverse is where I like it, I can use a Neon short shifter to shorten my shift throws, and I can put urethane shift bushings on the cable to really improve shift feel. That and they're dirt cheap and easy to find. But beware, you can get banned from TurboDodge.com for recommending them. haha, been there, done that. Permaban... Anyways. I also wanted a '91+ tranny so that I could simply buy a Turbo III clutch from my local Dodge dealer. It was a good choice, I've never had such an awesome clutch. It's clutch nirvana. At one point I had alot of trouble with the front suspension, so I sourced an '89 K member. This is the improved "dual hinged" k-member that was said to reduce torque steer. All I can say is HECK YEAH IT DOES! I can let go of the steering wheel at full throttle and the car goes in a straight line. It's amazing. After fixing the front suspension I decided the front end was sitting too high with the new springs, so I cut 2 coils out of each side. But I left the back end alone, so it's about 1" lower up front than in back. That seriously improved my traction in first gear. I also removed the balance shafts from this engine. The engine doesn't seem to buzz any more than it ever did. Seems to idle smoother actually. I swapped on an oilpan from a 2.2 TBI when I did that so that I wouldn't have to use like 8 quarts of oil. I'm using a Ford 351 V8 oil filter. It's BIG. And it's a Wix filter. And I run Royal Purple synthetic oil. I recently sourced a Shelby Z hood. I wanted a bulge hood on this car. I'll have a vinyl sign shop print me up (cut me out?) the word intercooled to stick to the sides of the bulge. I just installed an intercooler, the next page is all about that. I also sourced a set of 15" pumpers that I put 205/50's on. They look far far better than the stock Pacifica rims, and show off my 4 wheel disc brakes quite nicely.
