Anyone who has an XR-7 especially in white with the white wheels knows they are a pain to keep clean. When I bought my car, one looked brand new, two were in fair condition but would not come clean no matter what I tried, and one was losing more paint day after day. So I decided to refinish them. To do this I used white wheel paint, wheel clear coat, acetone, brillo pads, tape, and newspaper.
The first step was to remove the factory clear coat from the wheel. For this, I used the brillo pad and acetone. The original clear has to come off all the visible silver areas of the wheels. I used masking tape to cover the silver areas of the wheel and newspaper to cover the tire. Using an exacto knife, I cut the tape so the edges would be smooth. I then sprayed the wheel with several coats of the white wheel paint.
Once the wheel was dry, I removed all of the tape, recovered the tire and sprayed several coats of clear over the entire wheel. For the wheel center cap, I cleaned it with soap and water, painted it with the white wheel paint and cleared it. Each wheel took about 4 hours to complete.
