PROJECT '68 CHEVELLE 454 VORTEC

Took a 454 Vortec/4L80E combo out of a '96 Suburban and dropped it in my Chevelle. Used the wiring harness, fuel tank and lines and even the aluminum driveshaft (cut down and balanced).
Aux. cooling fan and trans. cooler from the 'burb worked out well.
Interior wiring still in progress. Got the VCM and fuse/relay box mounted and then realized I was going to have to wire in the ABS module for gear changes. Hooked the Tech 2 up and it wanted to see the module to change the gear ratio. OOPS. That's it laying on the drivers floor. Gonna hit it again tomm. (1/8/05) Trying to get ready for the Bradenton race 2/13-2/15.
Used marine grade ceramic/rubber switches and pushbutton. OBD2 DLC right under switches. Factory underhood fusebox on kickpanel.
1/21/05- Got the Crane programmer and to make a long story short, it wouldn't program and I had to send my programmer AND VCM back to Crane to get it to work. Oh well, MIGHT make it to the track on the 31st. The good news is they're going to do it for no addl. charge (props to Rollins Performance for that!).
Got the N2O hooked up and gonna go ahead and put the cam in this weekend(meaning no before and after dyno!). Get everything finished up so hopefully when the programmer gets here (Fri?) I can go ahead and hit the track.
Looks like it's gonna stay primer for a while. :(
1/28/05- Got the VCM and programmer back as promised, PROPS to Crane for that! Had 5.13 gears avail. and any size tire I needed. Also selected the cam I put in (cool, huh?).I can adjust fuel and timing up or down and either set the speed cut to 130 or unlimited (I picked unlimited!). I'm hoping it hit's 325-340 hp and gets me solidly in the 11's. Looking like the stock fuel pump may be an issue though. Find out tomm.
1/29/05- Put it on the dyno today. Slightly disappointed with the results. Max hp was 283 with 367 torque at the rear wheels. Fuel pump couldn't keep up at the upper ranges and hitting the N2O was a definite no-no. Couldn't keep a/f below 13.7-13.9. I'll be researching fuel pumps and adjustable fuel pressure regs. in the next few days. Looks like it'll be running 12.2-.3's for now. Not bad for a cam change only 454 Vortec. I'm just like anybody else, I wanted more! I've got a few tricks left so it may see 11's but I don't have my hopes too high. I'll post the dyno sheets when I get 'em (forgot to take a disc with me and their printer wouldn't print).
1/30/05- Well, dummy me. Didn't have the alternator on yet (drag cars need an alternator? With a VCM and fuel injection a definite YES!!!). Power, idle and driveability MUCH improved with an alternator. 'magine that.........
