My big day came in late August of 2005, it was the fourth actual work week on my car since it rolled into my garage rotary equipped. With all systems good to go, we ran the car with the rear blocked up to make sure everything was in check for its first drive. Everything seemed smooth, so it was slowly lowered to the garage floor. My heart began pounding out of my chest with excitement as I slipped into the driver?s seat and began to fumble for the right key. I turned the ignition, and the RX fired up instantly as it had so many times before, I let it warm up until it began to idle. I slowly placed the shifter up and right to reverse and carefully released the clutch pedal, excitement skyrocketed as the car began to move out toward the open road. I took it nice and easy around the block, carefully monitoring the vital gauges, everything was in perfect operating range... the neighbors admired the tone coming from the open headers hahaha. I took a few more quick trips around the block in my hoodless exhaust-less car with friends and family before I knew it was ?that? time.
I drove solo to the nearest country road, stopping abruptly I stared at about a mile of straight open road, it was go time. I revved the engine to 2500 RPM, dropped the clutch at a quickened rate and punched the gas with curious excitement. The LT1 roared as it came to life, pure adrenaline was injected into my veins as I was thrown back into my seat. Traction was lacking between the 215/60?s and the country asphalt, so I grabbed 2nd gear quickly. A slight chirp was emmited, and the RX-7 began accelerating at its full potential, it was glorious! My ears were flooding with the blast of the pounding engine and my brain screamed to slow down, but my right hand released its death grip from the steering wheel and slammed the shifter into 3rd. I stared ahead with tunnel vision, and drew out third gear to about 5,000 before I decided it was time to slow, after all I had just put together this car! The headers popped with angry backfires as I slowed to a comfortable speed, my heart raced and a smile formed? this car is FAST!!
